‘The Troubles’ is a commonly used term to describe the 30 year conflict in Northern Ireland which raged from 1968 to 1998. Although labyrinthine in nature, the central issue was fairly simple, a debate about Northern Ireland’s constitutionalist status, a question that still remains unresolved. The Unionists, mainly Protestants, seek to remain part of the United Kingdom, whereas the Nationalists, or Republican movement, believe in a united Ireland. The difference between now and the period covered by the Troubles is that both sides have agreed to continue the debate by political, rather than violent means. Following a civil rights march in October 1968, tension between the two communities escalated into violence. Many thanks for help at IOW On August 28, my wife Jane and I rode onto the green at Ryde, Isle of Wight, on my scooter. When we had found a spot to park, Jane removed her helmet and proceeded to get off the scoot. Then she slipped and fell backwards onto the ground, cracking her head on a lamppost. She was concussed and bleeding quite badly from a deep laceration on the side of her head but two gentlemen and a lady came to our rescue. One gentleman helped Jane sit upright while the other gentleman compressed a pad on her head wound. The lady rang for the ambulance. Having created the iconic Vespa Specials over 30 years ago the equivalent Lambretta has been a long time coming but Guido explains that 2016 sees its arrival: “We have a very good relationship with Tino Sacchi and the Lambretta specials are all based on his performance kits. The first 270cc Super Monza kits are just being fitted in our workshops but, just as with the Vespas, we can build a Lambretta according to the customer’s own specification. Urang Matang Lighting the Fuse (self-released – urangmatang.com) Urang Matang are a band that I’ve a huge amount of time for, and this release continues to emphasise why I think they’re such a great band. Continually evolving their sound, this album has a very strong 2-Tone vibe about it, without actually making the mistake a lot of bands make, of trying to copy the sound. That said, they also venture regularly, and comfortably, into reggae territory without managing to sound either unconvincing or patronising. Make no mistake, this is a band who know exactly what they’re doing. Scooterists have a good reputation for supporting charities and when setting up the club Simon was advised to consider how it would deal with the inevitable approaches for support. “Despite its size the club is run on a shoestring. In order to avoid repeated discussion about who we’d support it made sense to pick a charity and stick with it. Between 1987 and 1992, Lancia dominated the World Rally Championship Group A with the legendary Delta Integrale. Winning a record-setting six consecutive constructors’ championships, taking in 46 victories along the way. This enabled Finnish driver Juha Kankkunen and Italian Miki Biasion to take four individual titles along the way, Kankkunen winning in ’87,with Biasion taking the title for the next two years before the Finn took the title again in ’91. It wasn’t only on the World circuit that they dominated. Without the persistence of Lambretta Concessionaires managing director Peter Agg the 200cc version of the TV175 Series 3 might never have been produced. Innocenti’s flagship model, the TV175 Series 3, was introduced in 1962 and came with an internal front disc brake as standard. It also had wider engine mounting blocks and a new crankcase for the larger top end set up. Its top speed wasn’t enough for British Lambretta riders though. Events such as Isle of Man scooter week and the advent of high speed regularity trial (an early form of scooter racing), especially at circuits such as Snetterton, where top speed was all important, led to a clamour for more power from the British. In an unusual move, a new performance package is about to be brought to market using EXISTING components and with a very specific ‘hi-level power spread’ tune. While a few companies are focusing on manufacturing brand new bespoke kits and components, one very sharp individual has managed to combine the exact blend of items required, along with a few specific modifications, to produce a 238cc Lambretta performance package. Riders returning from a jaunt on the test bike have been noted as describing the power delivery as ‘the Holy Grail’ and ‘remarkable’. The package, which consists of cylinder kit (inc head and piston), 62/115 race crank, special reed block, a tour exhaust, bearings, seals and a 27mm carb (yes 27mm) has been seen to hit 38bhp and 27lb-ft in testing, but…

Vespa Club of America announces Josh Rogers as VP The Vespa Club of America has confirmed the appointment of Josh Rogers, a man with over 10 years in the motorcycle industry and more than 25 years as an enthusiast and a collector, as its new vice president. The club is getting ready to celebrate its 25th anniversary rally in Seattle on July 6-9, 2017, and Josh is already working on sites for 2018. “With its triangulated and squared off leg shields, antennae-like handle bars and for the first time a rectangular headlamp there was nothing else like it in comparison.” In the spring of 1968 Innocenti launched its new range of Lambretta scooters called the Luna line. Totally different in appearance to any other Lambretta before it, the Bertone-styled machine showed the way ahead in modern design. There were to be three models, the Lui with a 50cc engine for the Italian home market and two export models, both with 75cc – the Vega and Cometa. The Cometa came with the Lubematic direct oil feed system. Frazer Day of Envy Customs is the artist behind The Troubles. A third generation professional artist, Frazer comes from a family well known in fairground circles. “I started painting when I was eight years old,” explains Frazer, “helping dad with his sign-writing and traditional fairground art. I don’t normally write about scooter racing as part of the column, but forgive me the indulgence this month. The recent race meeting at Cadwell Park was the climax to a race season that has seen some brilliant International racing all year. But the last meeting was one of incredibly mixed emotions for everyone involved. Just a couple of weeks earlier we had learnt of popular racer James Campen sadly passing away at just 48. James had been a previous BSSO champion, riding engines developed by tuning legend Charlie Edmonds who spent a week rebuilding and preparing James’ ex-championship winning Group 4 Lambretta to ride in a memorial parade. Young rider Joe Ravenscroft was doing similar with James’ track motorcycle and it was repainted to match the Group 4 Lambretta.…

Buzzing off the good weather and our swim in the Rhine, it was time to pack up and hit the road again. This time we were Holland bound and heading to the legendary town of Arnhem. I think we’d all watched the epic A Bridge Too Far as kids, so it was great opportunity to visit somewhere with such prominent history. Again, we got lucky and the campsite was another gem. Each pitch had its own private shower hut; how good would that be on a national? Anyway, the night in town was relatively quiet: a few beers and a pool table was all we needed before we hit Venlo! When 22-year-old Armando Pastorelli returned from national service to his native Puglia in Southern Italy, there was no work and few prospects. Like many of his countrymen, he headed to the industrial north where fate secured him a training course at the Innocenti factory in Milan. Emerging as a mechanic, qualified to work on the still relatively new Lambretta range of scooters, Armando was sent to England in 1952. This was the first year Lambretta scooters were officially imported to the UK and the scale of investment by Lambretta at this point in history was huge as they were engaged in cutthroat competition with their rivals at Piaggio and their Vespa scooters. Last month I skimmed over the jetting, and ended up receiving a few questions on the matter, so here’s abit more in-depth info: This is a 2015 catalysed PX125, due to the cat exhaust and other Euro 3 emission friendly restrictions it runs this jetting as standard: Si 20/20 carb with 140 air corrector – BE5 atomiser – 96 main, and a 45/145 pilot. When fitting the SIP Road 2.0 exhaust, I changed the air corrector to a 120 and the pilot jet to a 50/100. All else remained the same. This did give ever so slightly rich readings, especially lower down the rev-range, but that’s how I like to run things… nice n’ safe. The net result is, that it’s lovely and rich when cruising at full revs, and…

The weather was good for the sprinters but offered no real benefits throughout the day from any tailwinds, which can play a big role in this sport. I always prefer to go back to the bare metal when painting. Mitch supplied some parts in grey primer, but a quick waft with a sandblaster revealed rust hiding away under the paint. Building up colours for the stable artillery belt and clear-coat. After blasting, etching and high build primer surfacer. A quick mockup of the scooter is vital to make sure it all fits! Martin McGuinness isn’t quite finished here but this illustrates how I work when portraying real people as opposed to the much freer process of creating generic faces which can often be drawn freehand. Thanks to their range of Vespa specials Armando’s are well known to British scooterists but there’s so much more to this famous name than Pinasco-fuelled fun. Situated in the shadow of Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground, Armando’s are now in their 58th year of business and can trace their heritage directly back to the Innocenti factory in Milan. They are a true family concern, the shop now being run by brothers Giulio and Guido who took over the business from their father Armando in the late 1980s. Today their premises are both a treasure trove of spare parts and a home to state of the art tuning equipment. The Armed Forces Scooter Club is a traditional scooter club for members of the armed forces who share a love for all things scootering. It’s an international club and has among its members are both serving and former armed forces personnel from many different nations. While most of the club ride traditional Lambretta and Vespa geared scooters, all makes, either auto or geared are welcome. Membership is open to all serving or former members of the armed services, the only criteria is that they must have been an ‘operationally deployable resource’ – effectively this excludes cadets and cadet force instructors without prior military service. Going into the meeting most classes were still potentially wide open so there was plenty to race for. This has been a memorable year with the presence of the Casa Lambretta team bringing some Italian glamour, and the success of the new LCGB Production class bringing in a host of new and returning riders there has been much to talk about this year, and of course there has been some excellent racing. So there were certainly some very eager riders in practice and a red flag was brought out within a lap after Stephen Hamilton parted company with his machine and went down heavily, breaking both collarbones and three ribs so the championship leader in Production class was headed for hospital!
