I thought about placing a disclaimer sticker on this month’s magazine, as it comes with a free reprint of the 1997 February/March edition of Scootering. The disclaimer would read: “1997 prices no longer applicable”. You might be thinking, yeah… we know! But I was surprised by how many phone calls we got from traders and advertisers last time we did a free reprint. They had genuinely been inundated with readers trying to buy a TS1 kit for £235, or a Malossi 166 kit for £99.50 and so on. You couldn’t make it up. With paintwork complete, preparations can now be made to commence the rebuild. Before starting this part of the project there are several important steps to take so things run smoothly. Firstly, make sure you have a good space cleared for the painted parts. There are a lot of these and they will cover a big area. Make sure all the surfaces are clean and if possible lay a sheet down first to prevent any scratches. Next, make a good clear space in your garage or shed where the rebuild will take place and leave plenty of room. Much in the world of scooters is subjective, with some topics being far more subjective than others. Go to a club meet or a rally and you’ll hardly ever get a definitive answer for any question. Readers of the motoring press and popular media could be forgiven for thinking that the recent extension of Paris’ Clean Air Zone (Crit’Air) to foreign registered vehicles had started some sort of motoring apocalypse. While it’s true that life’s become much more complicated for hauliers and coach operators visiting the city, for the majority of British scooterists venturing overseas there’s little impact – for now. Clean air zone legislation was introduced in Paris on July 1, 2016 and from April 1, 2017, those laws will apply to foreign registered vehicles. In brief, any vehicle entering the Crit’Air zones in Paris, Grenoble or Lyon between the hours of 8am and 8pm must obtain and display a vignette (sticker) entering without one attracts a fine of €70. From the outside Glasgow Lambretta is a rather anonymous building situated in the city’s Maryhill district but inside it’s an absolute treasure trove. The name is also misleading as the workshop carries a full range of parts for all models of Lambretta, but also Vespa and LML Scooters too. Having spent a few months on speed and power upgrades, this month we wanted to focus on handling. One thing I’ve always thought about the Vespa suspension is how comfortable it is to ride. I always feel that the Vespa is more of an armchair ride compared to my Lambretta… which is fine, but the ‘pogo’ element of a Vespa is the trade-off. In terms of value for money, and for the average rally-going scooterist, Escort shocks are hard to beat in terms of their cost and simplicity. Built between 1956 and 1959 at Douglas’ Bristol factory, the humble 92’ came from a line of basic machines that formed the backbone of 1950s scootering but never attracted the glamour of their GS stablemates. Despite the fact that examples can still be obtained relatively inexpensively, the beautiful curves of the 92’ are rarely seen on current rallies, making this 1958 specimen stand out from the crowd. Jez discovered his 92’ seven years ago while looking for a 200cc engine on eBay: “I saw a photo of the rear end and fell in love. It was in pretty much the condition you see it in today.
