Attendances at women’s matches are rising without a glass ceiling in sight. On 10 March, two records were set: the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble set a new world record for a women’s match of 17,440, beating the marks set at the World Cup finals of 2014 and 2017.
Thanks to intensive preparations by Harlequins, the Twickenham Stoop had earlier set a national club record of 4,542, more than for its recent International against Wales.
All the attendance records by the Six Nations countries have been set in the last three seasons. Worryingly, though, England lie fifth in the turnstile stakes. If the RFU were to follow French policy of taking Internationals around the country, could it match their figures? Imagine England v France played at Gloucester, Leicester or Northampton.…
