50 Days of Fun!

What happened in the last 50 days from May 9 to June 27 has really been a blur. May 9th I took a trip to Mesa, AZ to pick up the freshly painted rpu body, which was mounted to the finished rolling chassis and included the upholstered seat. I headed back to Tucson and then out to Lone Wolf Speed & Custom which is located 30 miles southeast of town. I dropped it off with Steve and we went over the details of what needed to be finished (wiring, engine start, a/c charge and much more) so we would have a chance to make it to the LARS 35 days later. True Blue

It is true, a good share of longtime hot rodders remember seeing, even if very briefly, a cool car in their youth, and never forgot the image. It was the same with nine-year-old Bill Layman. He was an avid fan of the TV program “77 Sunset Strip” and of the car which Ed “Cookie” Burns drove. It was a ’22 Model T Ford roadster pickup, and it was wild. Built by Norm Grabowski, a car guy, and actor in Hollywood, it was rented out to the studio for the TV series. Just a note: the real car just came out of hiding from where it had been since the ‘60s. #54 Los Angeles Roadster Show

This year marked a first for the L.A. Roadster Show with set up taking place on Thursday June 14 and the show following on Friday and Saturday. The departure from Sunday/Father’s Day was met with skepticism by some rodders but in reality turned out to be a great move. This is especially true for the many out-of-towners who were able to be back home on Father’s Day. The last two years of the show was met with temperatures in the high 90’s to low 100’s and they were not ideal conditions. This year Mother Nature cooperated with 90 degrees on set up day followed by 84 degrees on Friday and 77 degrees and partly overcast on Saturday. Back to the Fifties is Unbelievable

The first Back to the ‘50s was held in 1974 with approximately 150 cars participating in a cruise to Porky’s Drive-In. Fast forward a mere 45 years and it’s grown to 11,707 participants, 450 vendors, over 80,000 spectators and is held at the beautiful Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Saint Paul. The event was voted the “Best Car Show” by USA Today in 2016 and 2017 and is on the ballot for 2018. After having attended this event for the first time in 20-plus years, I’d have to agree. The weather was a mix of clouds and sun with temps in the low ‘80s and no rain. The spectator crowd was impressive on Friday and overwhelming on Saturday. By now, we’ve all heard many exciting tales of barn finds of one sort or another. You know the kind, a gearhead stumbles across an old barn by chance which has an old ’32 tucked in the back corner with horse blankets piled on top, while looking for an old lawn mower. TECH DEVELOPMENT TO REPRODUCTION AND BACK AGAIN

Since I’m a self-professed “car guy,” and I’ve built a few cars over the years, I’m sure it isn’t news to any other “car guys” reading this, when I say that a tremendous about time and effort goes into locating and sourcing parts for our cars. Often times, good used parts are available, but those take time to find and then repair or rebuild. Sometimes your original part can be rebuilt and re-used, but not always. (Yes, even though I built a business on reproduction parts, I too still appreciate a good ol’ used or NOS part). Consider your ‘40 Ford, for instance, was originally built 78 years ago. The Sangster Gangster

Don Sangster is the owner of Sangster Buick GMC in Wenatchee Washington and as can be imagined, for an away from the big city dealership, gets the occasional phone call enquiring if a certain a car, pickup, farm tractor, snowmobile or another interesting item could be used in a trade. In 2010 Don got a call from the local Ford Dealer saying he had a ’65 4-door Buick which ran. Don’s initial thought was: It sounds like a junker, and replied, I’m not interested. Every summer for about 9 years, I have been going on Road Tours around the country in the back seat of my papaw’s (grandfather Ron Hoffman) hot rods, and for the last three years, I have been driving my ‘29 roadster pickup with papaw riding shotgun. I’ve taken my baby blue to Bowling Green, KY, Pueblo, CO, and now St. Paul, Minnesota for Back to the ‘50s car show. Many folks state that hot rods are all about the look, which is a semi-accurate statement in that along with the looks you must factor in safety and dependability. Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden, Alabama have designed a high-quality front brake system based on the iconic Kinmont disc brakes from the 1940s. They combine the vintage look of the original Kinmont Safety Stop disc brakes with the stopping power of modern disc brakes. They also include internal features which make them easy to bleed and maintenance-free. The Johnson’s Kinmont brake is designed around the venerable ’37-’48 Ford spindle and uses a 10.5˝ vented rotor with a four-piston caliper. The Final Installment It was a mad rush but thanks to the crew at Charly’s Garage and Steve Codianni/Lone Wolf Speed and Custom, the deadline of getting the Rodding USA ’32 Ford roadster pickup completed in time for the L.A.
