’36 Fords and Postal Delays

1936 Ford roadsters This issue presents a contrast of styles when it comes to building 1936 Ford roadsters from “old school” powered by a flathead to “state-of-the-art” with a fuel injected 392 Hemi under the partial hood. One was built in the early 1990s, the other was completed a few months ago, and just in time for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster competition at the Grand National Roadster Show. Old School’ suspension consists of a dropped I-beam axle and a Ford 9-inch with lowering blocks and parallel leaf springs while “State-of-the-Art” features a custom independent front with rack and pinion and a Ford 9-inch with coil-overs and air ride. 2018 Boise Roadster Show

Founded in 1973 by the late Bill New, brothers Scott, John and Brad now run the very successful Boise Roadster Show. For the last 46 years the show has been held at the Expo Boise Show Grounds attracting close to 200 entries from all over the western USA and Canada. Chip Foose made a guest appearance on the Saturday and answered fans questions as well as signing posters or whatever people put in front of him. Spiderman also showed up on Saturday for photos with the younger ones. The quality of the bikes, cars, and trucks on display was extremely high. After the ISCA (International Street Car Association) judging was done, 9 ISCA Street Achievement awards were presented. While this winter’s weather has been relatively mild in the midwest, it has been unseasonably cold. If you have a hot rod project in the works, that is not a big problem, as it typically affords us more garage time. However, if your hot rod is finished or you are between projects, cabin fever can certainly set in. When the automobiles were first introduced to the masses all of the topics above were little more than an afterthought. After all, automobiles did evolve from carts, wagons and carriages, pulled behind horses. Henry Ford introduced his beloved Model T in 1908 and it quickly became Americas favorite and best-selling car. Mr. Ford had a keen eye, always looking for ways to manufacture his cars faster and at lower prices. By 1914 he achieved his dream, the moving assembly line. That idea turned into another success and by the early 1920’s half the cars on the roads were Model T’s. PROJECT HOT ROD ROADSTER PICKUP

Project RPU is heading into the home stretch with the finish line in sight. Charles Spencer/Charly’s Garage has been hard at work completing the bodywork and spraying color on the sheet metal and chassis. All of the chrome from Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating made it back to Arizona to be reassembled on the Axalta Coating Systems Pomegranate Red chassis. Today is the last day of April and I was able to photograph the completed chassis complete with the Johnson’s Hot Rod Shops Kinmont disc brakes on the front. SHIFTING PARADIGMS GET YOUR ACT IN GEAR

The transmission incorporated in this project is a 700-R4 automatic overdrive from our donor S-10 truck. Once the transmission is put in gear it will do the rest by itself. But we need to be able to select Forward, Reverse, or Park while retaining the Model A floor shift look. Lokar sells an excellent product but that would be too easy. The shifter needs to have well defined detents and a neutral safety switch is mandatory. We will use an old style Mopar switch from Summit, part number SMP-LS201 and build the rest from scratch. Our first configuration worked but was problematic. Instead of living with a substandard shifter we rethought the design and decided now was the time to fix the problem. When you acquire your first Ford Model A at 10 years old it’s probably a given you are going to spend your life as a car guy. Jack Pieknik grew up in Michigan and his dad had a filling station which also sold used cars. Jack paid $20.00 for the 2-door sedan and proceeded to brush paint it. This of course was the beginning of a life-long love for hot rods and customs. Jack and his wife Pam spent many vacations attending car shows and events across the country and were in the market for a 1936 Ford roadster. Deuce Days Northwest Deuce Days Northwest, the largest 1932 Ford show in the world is just around the corner and show chairman Al Clark wanted to let the readers of Rodding USA know that registration has opened as of May 1, 2018 for the July 18-21, 2019 event. Deuce collector Greg Morris of Hugoton, Kansas purchased this 1955 Chevy Bel Air in 1964 for $500.00. It was running the original 265 cubic inch V8 until Greg and his friends blew up the engine. He promptly located a hefty 409 complete with B&M transmission and proceeded with the installation without his dad’s knowledge. That all came to a screeching halt when Mr. Morris found out what was going on and he told Greg to remove it. Greg ordered a fuel injected 327ci/375 horsepower engine but it was never installed in the car. was ultimately sold to a local many resident years who never did anything with the car. The idea was to create a laid-back cruise-in event, in an effort to raise local awareness about the company and welcome local car enthusiasts to tour the cool facility. The event started small, but quickly took off and became a destination for car guys East of the Mississippi. For the 2018 event, thunderstorms threatened the rain-or-shine event on Saturday, April 14. ABOUT THE NEON MUSEUM Founded in 1996, the Neon Museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment. After a seven-year period without any large indoor car shows in Spokane, ISCA judge and local resident Brian Anderson took the plunge and organized the first Annual Spokane Speed and Custom car show which was held April 7– 9, 2017. Held at the Spokane Fair and Expo Center, the same location as this years show, Brian and his team worked hard to attract top quality cars to ensure their efforts were not just a temporary success.
