2017 is the 85th anniversary of the 1932 and the 2nd annual Havasu Deuces car show which took place in early March in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Even though the show highlights the 1932 Ford it is open to 1957 and earlier custom cars. The event begins on Thursday with an afternoon street show on McCulloch Boulevard. The street is closed to traffic and the hot rods and their owners take over the business district. Lake Havasu has become home to many rodders and Friday is shop tour day. The show entrants spend the day going from shop-to-shop viewing collector cars and rods along with some amazing man caves throughout the town. The foundations of the Kansas City Automotive Museum were laid back in 2011, when a group of automotive enthusiasts came together with the idea of starting a world-class museum to entertain and educate all generations through the preservation, promotion and display of Kansas City’s rich automotive heritage. After several years of grassroots campaigning, the Kansas City Automotive Museum opened its doors as the first public automotive museum in Kansas City. The goal of the Kansas City Automotive Museum is to educate visitors on not only the automotive history of our world, but more specifically, to educate them towards the rich automotive history of the Kansas City area. The Tucson Street Rod Association has annually hosted their Rodder’s Days show since 1974 and this year had perfect sunny weather for the April 29th event. Nearly 300 customized pre-1972 cars rolled into Tucson and onto historic 4th Avenue for the show. The “Avenue” provides the perfect location amongst the many shops, restaurants and watering holes. Three-day attendees are provided with a Friday afternoon “burger burn” at 9,000 feet on Mount Lemmon amongst the pine trees in the Catalina Mountains. Due to a weather front which blew into Arizona mid-week, the high temp was in the low ‘50s but those who took the drive were provided with an excellent lunch. Would you like to have your tires look as good as your paintwork? Then the question becomes whether to dress your tires or not to dress them? The answers I receive from my customers are as varied as the cars themselves, as well as some of the things they do to achieve their desired look can be seriously crazy. Which by the way do not provide for any protection or conditioning of the rubber. For me, my vehicle does not leave the garage without having dressed the tires each time I wash it. I simply cannot embrace the concept of having gleaming paint and chrome only to look down and see nice wheels with dingy gray, brownish rubber. The first time I heard about this car was the summer of 1994. I was at a car show, and this friend came up and said he had bought a 1932 Ford Roadster. He wanted me to come by his shop and look at it to see what it would cost to fix it up. This was on a Sunday; Monday I was there to look at the car. It turned out not to be a Roadster but a Sport Coupe. The car was on a Deuce Factory frame, but the car was stripped of the interior. After buying many street rods and customs and fixing other people’s mistakes, I decided to build my own custom from frame up. Hiring Jeff Vanluvanee from Vanluvanee’s Hot Rods and Customs in Walnutport, PA, we built a 1941 Ford Convertible custom. After showing and driving it for 10 years, I decided it was time to build another car on my bucket list - a 1932 Ford Roadster. I chose the Dearborn Deuce body because of the folding top and roll-up windows. It was a no-brainer to hire Jeff Vanluvanee to also build this car because of his excellent body work and paint work. Way back in 1989 Bill Cromling of Grafton, OH was ready for a real hot rod and set out to build the car of his dreams. He had planned on building a steel car but when he contacted Brookville Roadster about their new steel 1932 Ford roadster he found that the popularity of the new car had caused a backlog in orders that he wasn’t expecting. Instead of joining the waiting list he contacted Harwood and purchased a fiberglass body and chassis to get the project under way. After purchasing the engine/ transmission and mocking the car up he found that it was going to take more talent than he had to finish the car the way he wanted. Whether floppy mod hairstyles, fab mod clothing, mod style music, ‘The Mod Squad’ TV show, or the ‘Mods and Rockers’ on their motorcycles and all other things ‘Mod’ during the ‘60s had any influence on them or not, two young hot rod friends, patternmaker Gary Lang and truck driver Bill Traquair, were quietly working away on their dreams in a rented garage in Vancouver. As was the case back then, with little equipment and even less money, they relied on their raw talent, innovation, and creativity to get the job done. “The Jones were in the market for a car for Sharon and the they 1933 liked woody...” Fifteen years ago Henry and Sharon Jones of Coupland, Texas took a trip to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY. While wandering the aisles of the grand exhibition center they ran across Hercules Motor Cars from Tampa. The Jones were in the market for a car for Sharon and they liked the 1933 woody which was in bare metal and wood and were impressed by the workmanship. During one of the trips back to the booth, Cecil Taylor, owner of Hercules said to Henry “you must like this car, you keep coming back to look at it.” Henry says Cecil called himself a metal fabricator saying “anyone can do wood.” The…

In 1951 the Front Range of Colorado was experiencing expansion in its transportation infrastructure. The Valley Highway (Interstate 25) was being constructed through the Denver Metro area north to south. The year was 1951 and this was also the beginning of something else rather significant, the foundation of Drag Racing Motorsports in Denver, and the Colorado State Patrol was a big part of this. In the late forties and early fifties there was a large interest in motor sports in the communities of Colorado and the rest of the country. Groups of young men found themselves modifying automobiles and building hot rods. These hot rod building activities took place in local service stations, repair garages, speed shops and home garages. Galpin Auto Sports’ seeds were planted in 1953 when Frank Galpin designed the 1952 Ford convertible, “Future Custom.” This build is considered to be the first “in dealership” customized car, and with it, began the process of instilling Galpin’s name and stellar reputation into the minds of California’s booming car culture. The City of Raleigh, NC rolled out the red carpet when the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association rolled into town April 28 for three fun-filled days packed with hot rods, custom cars and trucks and muscle cars. Great weather resulted in a huge turnout of fans for the North Carolina Nationals at the state fairgrounds for the third annual show, and no one went home disappointed.
