ROLAND Sands, 44, is the son of Perry Sands, who founded US manufacturer of high-end custom wheels and brakes, Performance Machine (PM) in 1970. Roland grew up in the PM factory, starting work there at age 14 sweeping floors, before learning the skills of machining, sanding, polishing and product development, en route to becoming the company’s Director of R&D. This meant conceiving new designs for wheels and stuff, while at the same time running his own AMA National road race team, which came about after his parents gifted him a one-day class at the California Superbike School for his 18th birthday.
