FOR Britain’s railways, 1955 was an interesting time – it was when the Modernisation plan was launched, but also still years ahead of the Beeching report which led to the wholesale closure of chunks of the network shown in this atlas.
The actual maps take up 45 pages and the lines are colour coded, stations show (where possible) the full name, with Greater London, South Wales, Glasgow, part of Yorkshire, Nottingham and Derbyshire plus the Manchester-Liverpool area having dedicated maps. Compiled by Peter Waller, the atlas reminds us of what a comprehensive network we had with places like Skipton connected to Colne, King’s Lynn to Cromer and Aberystwyth with Carmarthen.
