The holiday season is nearly here! It’s time to work on quilting projects that will make the season even more memorable, whether you’re creating gifts, decor, or special quilts to share with loved ones. I wanted to make this issue of Quiltmaker an inclusive celebration of the holidays and asked contributors for quilts to reflect favorite winter holidays and traditions that may not get as much recognition as Christmas. And, wow, did they deliver! One highlight of the issue is Diwali Lights by Preeti Harris. Her gorgeous, glowing quilt looks complex but is so doable. While Diwali is not quite a winter holiday, it’s close enough—and the design could easily be adapted to celebrate any holiday by changing the color scheme. It’s time to take your quilting skills to the next level and draw your own designs. Quilting motifs are larger-scale designs specifically designed to fit your patchwork. With a pencil, tracing paper, and a basic understanding of symmetry, you can create quilting designs that accent any area of your quilts. To begin, trace the seamlines of one block onto tracing paper. Fold the paper in half to create crease lines running horizontally, vertically, and diagonally across the block. Most motifs can be created by drawing a quarter or half of the whole design. The crease lines running over the block guide the minimal amount you need to draw. Meet Preeti I grew up in India and studied Architecture. I came to the US as a student in 2003, studied Planning and have been a Transportation Planner since 2005. I met and married my American husband Paul in 2007. He features prominently in my quilting discussions and photoshoots. My mom is an accomplished sewist. She made our clothes when we were young. I remember wearing dresses with laces and buttons and appliqué motifs. Do you do anything besides quilting that our readers would enjoy learning about you?
