This issue of Quiltmaker coincides with two personal milestones—my 2nd anniversary as editor of Quiltmaker and my 50th birthday. Nearly LeMoyne LeMoyne Star blocks and quilts have been a quilter’s favorite for more than 200 years. And it is easy to see why. In the centuries past, this quilt block was known as “Star of LeMoyne” or “Lemon Star.” The most popular name of this block is “LeMoyne Star,” (notice the capital “M”) though it may also be found using a lowercase “m,” as in “Lemoyne Star.” The LeMoyne Star quilt block is named after brothers Jean Baptiste and Pierre LeMoyne, who founded the city of New Orleans in 1718. French speaking quilters named and referred to the popular 8-pointed patchwork star as LeMoyne. It appears that in the North, the non-French-speaking quilters renamed it LEMON STAR, shortening the original French name for this beautiful block. I have taken…

When you think about all of the geometric shapes at the fingertips of every modern quilter, which one comes immediately to mind? Is it the ubiquitous circle that can be hinted at with elegant curved background quilting or quartered and stitched into an elegant variation of the drunkard’s path pattern? Maybe you envisioned a triangle, pieced as a flying geese block, arranged into a hexagon quilt, or elongated into spokes and spikes. You could choose a rectangle of any shape; a trapezoid; diamond; oval; or better yet, the simple square. Squares are, for the most part, the most basic shape that a child can define, and a quilter can sew. The key to their beauty and elegance is their simplicity. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances.
