Right-click an image in Adobe Bridge and choose Open In Camera Raw, then go to the panel on the righthand side. Plane-spotters may be the butt of jokes, but when you get up close to aircraft at the airport you can begin to see the appeal of such a curious hobby. It’s genuinely thrilling to see these huge machines soaring upwards in an endless procession. What’s more, they come in all sizes, with differingmarkings, wings and noses. There are many ways to convert images to mono, but the most effective offer more than just a oneclick solution. They give us tonal control over colors. This might sound strange – after all, we’re getting rid of the color, aren’t we? But that color information is vital for finetuning the mono look. Here are four of the best methods... Black-and-white conversions will almost always benefit from a contrast boost. One of the most powerful tools for the job is Curves: either the Tone Curve in Camera Raw or Photoshop’s Curves command. The curve line starts off as a straight diagonal line that represents the tonal range of the image, from the shadows on the left side to the highlights on the right. Any point along the line that is moved above the starting diagonal lightens that part of the tonal range; any parts moved below will darken the range. So if you create an S-shaped curve line by dragging the top part up and the bottom part down, you lift the highlights and deepen the shadows, thereby adding contrast. 01 ORGANIZE SHOTS INTO A GRID We shot about 350 photos, which we began by viewing in Bridge. For more variety between planes and positions, organize the view into a 10-column-wide grid of images. But there’s still something to be said for a lack of detail. Just as modern-day blockbuster movies are arguably no more pleasing than black-and-white classics, photos stripped of color and detail can sometimes enhance the mood of your image. A grainy black-and-white treatment is a classic look for street photography, evoking a documentary style. In the days of film, graininess – an uneven clumping of silver particles – was more noticeable in the fast films photojournalists used, and emphasized even more when photographers pushed their ISOs by combining underexposure and over-development.
