Pillay, 39, of Bayview, in Chatsworth, was sworn in as an ANC MP last Wednesday during a virtual ceremony at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in Pietermaritzburg. He replaces advocate Loyiso Mpumlwana, who died in December.
Pillay served as the ward councillor for Bayview, Havenside, Mobeni Heights and Lamontville from 2011 to 2016. He then went on to become an ANC executive committee member and, more recently, he worked as a grant-in-aid manager in the eThekwini Municipality.
