Sony has unveiled the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II, a successor to the original Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, which was launched in 2016 as one of the first G-Master lenses. The new lens promises to improve on the original with better image quality and faster autofocus, and is more compact and lightweight. With 14 elements in 11 groups, including x2 XA and x2 ED elements, as well as a Nanon AR II coating on the front of the lens, Sony says this second-generation lens’s refined optics will produce significantly less colour fringing and reduced chromatic aberrations. The 11-blade aperture should make for a nice rounded bokeh, with the classic 85mm portrait focal length being a favorite of many for creamy background falloff. Wildlife Photographer of the Year has released a selection of highly W commended images from this year’s contest, ahead of the announcement of the winning images and photographers. WPOTY is held in partnership with the UK’s Natural History Museum (NHM) in London. Images are judged for their “artistic composition, technical innovation and truthful interpretation of the natural world”, and the contest, which is now in its 60th year, has long placed a strong emphasis on conservation and sustainability issues. This year’s winners will be announced on October 8, and the public will be invited to vote for a People’s Choice winner from a separate shortlist. Of all the darkroom techniques to have made an impact on digital photography, solarization is perhaps the most instantly recognizable. First championed by Man Ray in the 1920s, solarization involved flicking on the lights in the darkroom while exposing a print, which partially inverts the tonal range of the image. Normally, the tonal range would run from dark areas to bright areas, and in digital imaging this is represented by the histogram, which groups dark pixels on the left of the graph and light pixels on the right. If we think of the range of brightness in this linear way, then imagine chopping the range in half and flipping one half around. This is what solarization does. If you’re shooting a popular location after hours you might have to share the space with a fellow photographer or two, but with a little common sense it’s not difficult to work around each other. However, visit a popular location in the middle of the day and you’ll often have to contend with crowds of sightseers. If you’re intent on capturing a people-free photo of a scene you have two options: wait and hope for a lull in the flow of visitors, or remove each and every offender in post.
