On Friday 7 December the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs introduced its new survey to the public at their 12.30pm conference at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. Some 72,738 people came through the show’s doors making this the largest amount of people to ever attend this amazing three-day show. David Whale, chairman of the FBHVC, presented the National Historic Vehicle Survey which is a very important document full of facts and figures based on the 19,943 owners, enthusiasts, trade and clubs and representatives from the wider UK public. For this document we can see £7.3 billon, yes you did read that correctly, is the total annual spending on historic vehicles and activities in the UK economy. There are 1,934,178 registered historic vehicles in the UK owned by 690,777…

Bryn Kemp reports that Saturday 11 October was the annual steam threshing day at Bardwell put on by the Wheeler family, with proceeds going to MANUP, a men’s metal health charity. The past year has seen the impact of mental health on young men in the preservation movement, particularly in the south-east with the loss of Toby Robinson in December 2024 and more recently Steve Tester, says Bryn Kemp. The Bardwell event has grown over the years and this year’s show cased a pair of horses delivering the crop to the threshing machine which is an unusual event for working shows these days. Don’t forget the south’s biggest Boxing Day vintage and classic tractor event in the UK with over 140 tractors and other vehicles taking part. It takes place at Jeff Burgess’s farm in Back Lane, Cross In Hand, Heathfield, East Sussex TN21 0NE, starting at 10am. SOME ASPECTS OF PRESERVATION IN DENMARK. Whilst Kevin Hoggett and his wife Rika were holidaying in Denmark, they visited the Aarhus Municipality, calling in at Odense on the island of Funen on the way. This latter deviation enabled them to visit Hans Christian Andersen’s House and also the Danish National Railway Museum where, among the various exhibits to be seen there, an unusual bus caught Kevin’s eye. This was a petrol-engined vehicle numbered DSB 215 which served the railways until 1954. It was built by a company called De Forenede Automobil Fabrikker, formed in 1918 by the merger of Thomas B Thringe, Anglo-Dane and JAN. This Odense firm - Triangel - continued in production until 1950. Their main product comprised buses but lorries and fire engines were also constructed. In…

We have just finished a very active season in all walks of vehicle preservation, which has seen many positives in various areas, but there have been some negatives in others, which need to be taken into account. As I write this in late November the attendance figures have just been released for the Classic Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham over 7-9 November, which saw a record crowd of 72,733 people attending over the three days. Wheeler Dealers TV star Mike Brewer has been recently quoted as saying: “It was the biggest and best show I have been to in my 19 years of coming to the NEC.” You certainly needed a…

Following our report on Steven Tester from Crowborough, East Sussex who sadly took his own life recently, on Sunday 2 November over 50 tractors gathered together at The Warren, Crowborough before taking to the roads on their way to The Huntsman, Groombridge Lane, Eridge. It took the drivers nearly three hours to get to this destination in improved weather conditions after a wet start which didn’t deter anyone from coming and taking part. At the time of writing the facebook donation page was still open, but £3,500 had been raised for Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team and BEN Support for Life. The clock is ticking to the next High Weald Steam Working and the team have secured the same site for 2026 as for the 2025 show. The 2025 show had a section set aside for Fordsons and following the success of this area the team is looking to put a Marshall of Gainsborough-themed area together. There has been a lot of initial interest with the request to bring some amazing Marshall steam engines to the show along with examples of tractors. Marshall’s had a very varied interest in manufactured products and the team is looking to get those unusual items stuck in the back of sheds out on display. A marquee has been arranged, and the team are looking to fill this with Marshall artefacts from trench pumps to sack…

ERTL In the big 1/16 scale, ERTL have released a Farmall 656 tractor with ‘Happy Birthday’ lettering on the side, priced at £100.99 [1]. This version has a narrow front axle. The 2WD Farmall 656 was produced from 1965-73 by International Harvester, the model having the tubular steel grille that replaced the earlier white mesh grille in 1967. It was available with a 4.6-litre, six-cylinder D-282 diesel engine or a 4.3-litre six-cylinder C-263 petrol/LP engine. The standard transmission had five forward gears plus reverse, or there was a two-speed power shift with ten forward and two reverse gears. Also from ERTL is an International Harvester 1466 in 1/32 scale, selling for £60.99 [2]. The 1466 was in production from 1971-76, a time when more attention was being given to driver…

STELLING MINNIS MILL Dear Editor I am a trustee of the windmill at Stelling Minnis in Kent. The Hornsby hot-bulb stationary engine that David Vaughan featured in the stationary engine section of the March issue of Old Glory has provided power for the mill since 1923. In David’s letter he asked whether the engine is still there and does it run. I can tell you that indeed it does and I was responsible for getting it started again after water had got down the exhaust into the engine. It is still going and powers the mill on open days. However, the sweeps on the mill are currently off and a millwright has been called in to do some work on the cap, so although the mill is open to visitors…

Product development continued unabated with the launch of the 2CX backhoe loader in 1990 followed three years later by the even smaller 1CX. In 1994 Joseph Cyril Bamford had a rose named in his honour. Called ‘Mr JCB’, the yellow rose was unveiled in the presence of HM The Queen at the Chelsea Flower Show. A year later and JCB was celebrating its 50th anniversary with a visit by HM The Queen to its World HQ, where she unveiled a replica of the Uttoxeter garage where Mr Bamford began his business all those years ago. The organisers of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society’s London to Brighton Run have announced two major changes for the 2026 event. Firstly, the event is to move back to its traditional date of May Day bank holiday Sunday, in this case Sunday May 3. Secondly, and for the first time since the start moved from Battersea Park to Crystal Palace in the early 1990s, it will once again run through London, from a start on Clapham Common. Details of the route will be available in due course. David Wallace reports that 2025 celebrated the 50th Biggar Vintage Rally which takes place each August. The first event had taken place in 1973 and three years were lost due to Foot & Mouth and then Covid. The rally raises funds for the Biggar Albion Foundation, which pays for vehicle storage, insurance & archive of the Albion Motor Car Company dating back to 1899. The rally has something for everyone, with displays of tractors, stationary engines, motor bikes, vintage and modern trucks along with a large entry of motor cars. But with the foundation of the event centred around Albion vehicles the organisers set a target of 50 Albions for the 50th rally. This target was exceeded, so the line up of Albion vehicles was impressive to say the least.…

James Allison has done it again and has nearly finished the restoration of the ex-Londonderry County Council 1925 Wallis & Steevens Advance No. 7835 which has had major boilerwork and came as a rough basket case via James Patterson in Northern Ireland - James is so pleased to see it all back together again. The new boilerwork is tight and neat which has lead to the lagging being placed all back on, this was an on-off seven-year restoration. The roller is seen out on one of its maiden trips by St John The Baptist Church, a corrugated iron church at Maesbury, Shropshire.…
