OXFORD DIECAST Oxford have released their 1/76 scale Sentinel DG4 flatbed in the dark brown and black livery of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway [1], retailing at £18.95. The L&YR was formed in 1847 when the Manchester & Leeds Railway amalgamated with a number of other smaller companies, followed by the East Lancashire Railway in 1859. It lasted as an independent company for 75 years, before amalgamating with the LNWR in 1922, in turn becoming part of the LMS in the 1923 grouping. It served 291 passenger stations plus goods stations, with road vehicles used for local collection and delivery of goods. The model’s registration, AW 4474 is from Shropshire, with AW issued between 1903 and 1921, although the Sentinel DG4 Steam Waggon wasn’t introduced until 1928, so it is…

Out by popular demand on Sunday 22 December at The Six Bells, Woodchuch, Kent was Michael Davis superb 1921 Aveling & Porter E-type No.10028 XM5870 that was new to the Borough of Paddington. It worked with F R Godden of Cheam in later life and was sold for scrap to C Harbour, Redhill. Thanks to the late John Sparks of Smallfield, a keen AP man of the time, the engine was saved. The rest is history, but Michael and his team had to start again with the boiler barrel that had been replaced by the previous owner, but was not straight and had to be stripped again and with the rivets all out correctly straightened. The job has been well worth it and it’s great to see the engine running…

Boxing Day 2024 brought a sight back to the streets of Workington not seen since 1989 says David Wallace. Courtesy of the Workington Transport Heritage Trust, a locally built 51-year-old bus ran on the Trusts free Boxing Day service from Seaton, through Workington and on to Salterbeck. The Leyland National Mk1 had been delivered new to Cumberland Motor Services in February 1973, working out of Workington depot, before transferring to Perth where it gained Stagecoach Stripes livery. Moving on again in 1990, the bus found itself at the Birmingham Coach Company, where it worked until 2001. It was brought home to West Cumbria and utilised on school services by a private coach operator and was taken into the Workington Transport Heritage Trust ownership in 2005. After a number of years…

CRAWLER LICENCES FOR RALLIES? Dear Editor I sent this email recently to a police officer I got to know but just thought it may be wise to send on to yourselves. It’s been brought up recently that we may need a Category H on our licences to be able to drive our vintage crawlers at a vintage rally or vintage working weekend. We have looked in to taking a test but it’s a full-on test for going on the road costing between £1300 and £2020 plus VAT. The highest priced stationary engine sold in 2024, went under the hammer on 21 November at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA, just a few miles from where Abraham M Zimmerman had built his engines starting in 1903. He was an agent for Columbus engines starting in 1900 and developed a gas conversion unit to petrol and with this successfully patent he reorganised the company to be called New Holland, the place where his works was. As we all know this was the start of big things and down the road today at Intercourse, PA New Holland balers and more are still made. This is the first time I have been able to talk with you all in 2025 after all the festivities that went on all over the UK. Although the weather was rather foggy and misty over the Christmas period the temperature was reasonably mild and everyone was out on the road with their vintage and classic vehicles, which was great to see at the many events I was able to attend. With the weather as it was there were a good number of steamers out and about in various locations as were stationary engines, particularly at the Sussex and Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group event at the SCHVPT premises at Copthorne, where I was made so welcome. The brilliant Cherry Hill, has sadly died at the age of 93, she was by far the leader in her field as the world’s foremost scale road model engineer. It was in her genes, as her father was a very talented model locomotive engineer building a fine GWR tender locomotive amongst others. Cherry outshone her mostly male contemporaries to win hordes of awards including nine gold medals at the annual Model Engineer Exhibition in London. This included the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award, the top prize for model engineering. The Telegraph called her the Fabergé of model engineering and rightly so. Cherry began learning her machining skills from her father before she was in double figures. She came to prominence when she won a second prize near the end of…

Well known East Anglia autioneer BarryHawkins has died at the age of 84. His company are well known to us as the auctioneers at the Weeting Rally, which today is conducted by his son Mathew who does an excellent job, as he does at all the other auctions they conduct today. Barry Lancelot Hawkins followed the footsteps of his father and grandfather running an auction business at Downham Market, Norfolk. For 10 years Barry shared the rostrum with Jim Ronan as they entertained the crowd as they sold vehicles at the Anglia Car Auction’s (ACA) premises at Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs has recently been in touch to tell us progress on various legislations that are progressing slowly. Martyn’s Law This proposed legislation (The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill) failed to complete the necessary approval process before the dissolution of Parliament prior to the General Election. As expected the new Government has adopted the proposal and revised draft provisions have been issued. The Federation is pleased to note that some of the concerns they had expressed with respect to small venues have been addressed although some questions remain concerning large venues used by small groups. Old Glory was able to take in a number of events throughout the UK over the festive period; this is just a taste of what went on. As for the weather, well, no snow, but Boxing Day and further on, fog, mist and in some cases light rain, was the way things were. However, temperatures were good for this time of year. As for New Year’s Day, that was gale force winds and more! These caused mayhem and the cancellation of many events and kept operators and punters indoors unfortunately. The now annual Mansi family threshing day took place at Colin Evans premises on Saturday 28 December, near Uckfield, East Sussex where over 100 people attended this fine event, says Colin Anton. The Marshall SLM drum was supplied by Bryn Kemp and Trevor Manual, with the original style post war Fisher Humphries Mk2 No. 1947 baler supplied from the Mansi collection. It was working well with the crop supplied by Wayne Elphick. Up at the headend was 1895 Fowler Endurance A4 No.7459. Ian Langley has rebuilt the rear axle assembly and had the engine all back together to have Endurance pass the boiler inspector on the Friday before the event. Belgian reader Stefaan Balyu took a holiday visit last year to Sweden and in the Gamla Linköping Open Air Museum in the city, he came across a Swedish-built portable engine in a shed there along with buildings containing other exhibits, including many tractors, plus other agricultural implements and various different types of historic farming machinery. Curious as to whether this engine - Munktells No. 5675 of 1916 of Type H6, manufactured in Eskilstuna - may have been a new find, he later consulted the European Traction Engine Register-2015 and discovered that it was recorded in that publication but at Skänninge, some 37 km (23 miles) away. Obviously at some time during the intervening years, the engine has been transferred to a somewhat more suitable and meaningful location for display purposes.…

On Saturday 16 November Morris Leslie held, at his auction centre at the former Perth airfield, a large collective dispersal sale of preservation lorries, stationary engines, tractors and cars. We concentrate on the stationaries that were sold in the morning of the event, which had a slow start over technical difficulties. The large number of attendees were not disappointed, but the good selection of clean engines did not excite as much as hoped. At Retromobile 2025 from 5-9th February, the Berliet Foundation will be showing a very rare exhibit, the 1909 Purrey steam lorry. In 1886, Valentin Purrey (1861 – 1928), born in Layrac (Lot & Garonne, France), set up first steam railcar in Barcelona (Spain) to provide a regular service in the city. In 1890, he returned to his native region and built a factory in Bordeaux-Bègles which, a few years later, covered 10 hectares and employed 450 people. While continuing to build successful self-propelled railcars (also known as railmotors) for numerous urban networks in France and abroad, this selt taught engineer began working on automobiles in 1898. He presented the prototype of a steam-powered lorry with a payload of 5 tonnes, fitted with a 2.7-litre 120 x 120 double-action 2-cylinder engine,…

On Wednesday 29 January at Newquay, Cornwall, H J Pugh has been asked to carry out the Dairyland Vintage Museum disposal sale following its recent closure. The Museum was very popular indeed and efficiently run. The well-presented collection was a major tourist attraction in the area and will be sadly missed by the many visitors to this part of Cornwall. The sale features a 'mint' David Brown Albion baler in original condition - as we know these are well sought after by collectors of this Huddersfield make and the baler was of course a Harrison McGregor design. How a chance meeting united a family with their one-time Winchester business. Winchester’s Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) has this year been putting the finishing touches to its latest restoration project, the 1950 Leyland Titan double-decker, HOR 811. This work has included adding the display adverts for local businesses that always adorned the sides and backs of King Alfred buses. “We searched through hundreds of period photographs to find adverts that would remind local people of the old days as they see the bus on our regular free Running Days and at other special events in the area,” said James Freeman, FoKAB’s chair. “We selected four adverts, featuring Ponsford’s Bread, the Snow White Electric Laundry, the well-known music shop Whitwams and Hyde Abbey Motors Ltd, and these have been…

HOAG A name that does feature extensively in US patent records is that of Andrew J Hoag who worked in Battle Creek, Michigan in the 1880s for Nichols, Shepard & Co (which see). HODGE Paul Hodge created a self-propelled fire pump in New York in 1840 that may have been a world first, though how useful it turned out to be is difficult to ascertain. HOEK Willem Adriaan Hoek ran a machine works at Scheidam, Rotterdam from 1870. Having studied British steam wagons, which he considered too heavy and firmly sprung for Dutch roads, he created a 2.5 ton ULW four-ton steam wagon in 1907 with very long laminated springs. Well know engineer Colin Anton was given a camera by the editor to use at the final big show of the year, the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show, held over 9-10 November and this is what he came up with. The entry here has unfortunately gone down, despite what some might say, but with engines inside and out dotted about on the site there was still plenty to see. Over the last few years the outside engines have been placed in a better position for the public to see and I was pleased to chat to a good number of owners here. It was a pleasure for Old Glory to be invited to the Sussex and Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group Festive Gathering at the Southern Counties Historic Vehicle Preservation Trust’s headquarters at Copthorne, West Sussex on Friday 27 December. It was good to see approximately 20 engines working away here. This included a number of debuts amongst the engines, which had come as far away as Essex and Herne Bay in Kent, both two hour drives from here. It was a good place for owners to chat, run their engines and enjoy the great company.
