South Korea is one of the fastest-growing coffee consumers in the world and the fourth-largest importer of Kenyan coffee Kenyan coffee is revered the world over for its comparatively high-quality beans, which have consistently attracted high premium prices globally. This phenomenon is attributable to a combination of high altitude, soils and coffee varieties, along with remarkable husbandry standards.
Notwithstanding such premium prices, the production of Kenyan coffee has, paradoxically, declined steadily from an average of 130,000 metric tonnes (MT) per year in the late 1980s to its current rate of 40,000MT. Such a decline is attributable to a lack of effective marketing strategies, among many other challenges. Analogously, Kenya is producing a Mercedes car but marketing it as ‘boda boda’.
