Even though I used to receive it in the mail, I am happy to look for it in stores. I’m not typically one to choose to ride slow — unless it’s during a race. A slow race. At a moto rally last year, I took part in a slow race, where the goal was to cross the finish line last. This type of race requires balance and focus, some thoughtful race craft, and really good throttle and clutch control. You all know I’m uber competitive and love to race, so of course I had a blast. Currently, three out of four new riders take a rider-training course to get a motorcycle licence. There are several fantastic programs across Canada that provide training on small motorcycles to give you the basics of riding. Often, all that’s needed to get into a course (aside from the related registration fees) is a written test and an eye exam — and you should bring riding gear. Then, after you’ve completed the course — which, depending on the province, might be only two days of training — all you need to do is pass a low-speed skill test in a parking lot to get the okay to get on the road. Rider assist systems like ABS and traction control have become almost universal in motorcycles. ABS itself has been around for almost four decades. It was first introduced into motorcycling way back in 1988, on the BMW K100RS. I remember having ridden that bike back then, and testing the rather rudimentary (by today’s standards) system in a back alley. The system monitored road speed and wheel rotation and activated when either wheel spun slower than the indicated road speed. It cycled several times a second (ABS now cycles in milliseconds), locking either wheel for a fraction of a second, releasing brake pressure to avoid full lock up, and then repeating that cycle until the bike came to a stop. If you’ve read The Last Word at all lately, you’re probably aware that electric motorcycles have been an unmitigated failure so far. Unlike the auto industry, where the EVs have established themselves as a significant — if not quite the all-dominating — alternative to internal combustion, battery-powered (full-size) motorcycles do not sell in anything remotely resembling industry-changing numbers. Worse yet, other than Zero – which, is not really successful but it has at least not gone bankrupt — there are no start-ups on the horizon that look like they can sustain a charge to respectability.
