Harry Ratcliffe was born in Littleborough, north east of Rochdale in Lancashire, in 1935. His father ran Ratcliffe Brothers, a local garage business, and it was here that young Harry would spend many happy hours watching work progress on servicing, repairing and overhauling customers’ cars.
Harry began his education at Dearnley Primary School, going on to attend Manchester Grammar School and then Rochdale Technical College, where he studied mechanical engineering and applied mathematics as a precursor to a career in engineering. In 1954 he was accepted as an apprentice at aircraft manufacturers AV Roe Ltd., joining their Chadderton factory, near Oldham in Lancashire, as a production engineer. Here he met up with Jeff Goodliff. In 1955 they built a two-seater sports car, using Riley parts, nicknamed ‘The Fireflash’.
