In the 1970s improving cars by fitting a set of alloy wheels was big business. Decent alloys transformed what could look to be a very standard everyday car into something significantly sportier in an instant. As a result, a great many designs of alloy wheel became available. I can still clearly remember the day (and the excitement) when I fitted my first set of alloys back in 1974. The trend back then was moving towards shiny, polished alloys although most of the wheels available for Minis were black and silver designs. The exception was Midland Metallic’s 5x10" alloy, which had a machined alloy finish; a ‘satin smooth’ finish was how it was described in the advert. His love for Elfs was handed down by his father Iain. “I was always into classic vehicles since dad bought the green Elf, and we always wanted a MkI Elf, so I ended up buying this one. When the Mini was released in Australia, as the Morris 850 in March 1961, the response from motorsport enthusiasts mirrored that in the UK. Some of the first local drivers to compete in Morris 850s were David Hooker, Tony Hill and Peter Manton. Manton had already made quite a name for himself, particularly in hillclimbs and some circuit racing, in a variety of BMC products. He was also partially responsible for the development of the twin-carburettor set-up used on the Sports 850, released only five months after the Morris 850, in August 1961. The UK Mini Cooper was released in the following month and BMC Australia was reported to be cautious about plans either to import it or assemble it locally. Based at the Green Caravan Site and The Inn on the Green at Wentnor, in the shadow of the Shropshire Hills, over the weekend of 17-18 July, the location could not have been bettered for scenery, facilities and access to other landmarks via the lanes of the county. Over 30 Mokes attended from all around the UK, carrying in excess of 60 club members who travelled on three routes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday afternoon saw select and stalwart Mokers take to the green lanes to the north of the campsite, accessed by the rather steep National Trust Long Mynd road. When restoring a Mini it is quite usual to have to rebuild the engine and gearbox. It is easy to remember to cost in major items such as these when planning the resto but one area that is often overlooked is the ignition system. All the parts in the system are relatively cheap compared to the resto as a whole but allowance should be made for this. If the engine is being modified, or changed for one of a higher capacity, a new distributor is worth considering as is, in all cases, electronic ignition. TA 6906 Model: 1961 Morris 850 History: The oldest continuously-registered Mini in Tasmania When TA 6906 first took up residence with our family, it came with a variety of issues that I really should have sorted immediately. A year later, I’m ashamed to say that the windscreen wipers still struggle in the lightest of showers, the erratic speedometer continues to suffer from epilepsy and the car’s drooping doors only seem to get increasingly harder to close as days go by. On 18 July a total of 17 Minis lined up at Raven Hotel in Hook for the third Thames Valley Tour. A 96-mile route, organised by Terry and Helen Schraider, lay ahead comprising many roads of Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. The first stop after 26 miles was Sonning for coffee at the Flowing Springs pub. The next 31 miles took us through Henley on Thames and up Pheasant Hill into a frequently used night rally section known as Gusset’s Wood. There was a lot of reversing of Minis on this section for passing tractors. Then it was on to the picnic lunch stop at Gray’s Court. Jenna Model: 1981 BL Mini 1000 Mileage: 83,169 History: Bought as a car to quench my Mini thirst and eventually sell; I got attached to it and plan to compete in regularity rallies… Once the major engine work had being taken care of by a helpful local company, and I’d completed the dirtier parts of the bodywork restoration, I moved on to priming the car. For this, I took myself back a few years to my bodyshop days and got hold of some of the primer I used to use on customers’ cars. This modified Cagiva Moke is owned by Mr Takumi Kiyama who lives in Kumamoto, Japan. His first contact with a Moke was around 20 years ago when he worked in a bar in Tokyo. The bar was popular with actors such as Koichi Iwaki. Takumi remembers the actor and his friends talking about cars and recalls that some of them had a Moke. In fact Koichi Iwaki drove an army green Moke in a TV programme. Takumi admits that all this led to his love of Mokes. When Takumi went back to live in Kumamoto he saw another Moke which was owned by an older friend. Super stylish, fun, colourful and funky, the cover car of the September 1995 issue was very much of its time and won Car of the Show at the 1995 Riviera Run. The cheeky two-seater roadster was superbly modified with custom colour-coded grille, multi-coloured seats and a fashionable custom bodykit. It was owned by Len Jones and was guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face, especially when you put your foot down and the turbocharger kicked in!
