I was reminded recently about the joys of receiving a postcard from someone traveling afar. In that small amount of space on a postcard, a story gets told. The note often alludes to the photo on the front, or else it recounts places seen, experiences had, and includes a statement of sentiment. And in this brief message, a handwritten postcard can become a keepsake, a time stamp, a cherished message. While what we print in every issue of MILIEU is far longer than a postcard, it is in the same vein we send you, our readers, the places and people we visit around the world of design, captured with striking photography, and written with feeling. Visual artist Lisa Hunt pays attention to what she sees in the world. “I’m constantly observing patterns in my everyday life that find their way into my work,” says Hunt, from her studio in East Orange, New Jersey. “When I started out, I knew I wasn’t going to be a painter,” and, so, she instead combined lines, symbols, and typographic elements on her canvases and screenprints, revealing the infinite possibilities of shape and repetition, with much of her work distinguished by her use of gold leaf. Drawing inspiration from traditional West African textiles and African-American quilt-making, her work explores the spatial and meditative relationships between patterns. WHEN CHARLOTTE AND Angus Buchanan purchased their Edwardian-era London townhouse, it came with inhabitants. The couple heard and even felt the breeze of pigeons flapping by that had taken roost in the attic, having flown in through the windows absent of panes of glass for many years. But no sooner had they rid the house of those pests than another longtime inhabitant made itself known. BORN AND RAISED IN MÁLAGA, one of the oldest cities in the world, designer Pablo Paniagua invariably turns to his hometown’s spectacular history as inspiration for the interiors he creates wherever he works. Everything he does, he says, is rooted in “my dreamy city—light, color, mass, void, geometry, endless seas of olive trees, sunsets like burnt embers, huge moons resting on the beaches.” But it’s also about the mix of people—Phoenicians, Romans, Moors—who have left their stamp on Málaga over time with craft traditions carried on by artisans who work in the city and other parts of Andalusia today. NATURAL DESIGNERS Not only is the design world still talking about William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement he launched in the late 19th century, but we’re also still living with and loving the patterns and motifs he and his artisans created. Jessica Clayworth (below, top), lead designer for Morris & Co., located in Buckinghamshire, England, commissioned Shea McGee (below, bottom), of Studio McGee in Utah, to rethink some of the most venerable patterns, namely Pimpernel (behind McGee), and Marigold (backdrop). “Shea’s infectious love for captivating patterns and everything aesthetic shone through,” says Clayworth from her design studio, “making this a truly natural partnership. Creative people seem to always have a favorite place and a favorite muse. They are mainstays to which an artist continually returns, actually and spiritually. For photographer Miguel Flores-Vianna, who has been everywhere in the world and has met, seemingly, everyone worth meeting in it, “Greece has been a constant part of the rhythm of my life.” In his new book, Haute Bohemians: Greece (Vendome), the Argentine-born Flores-Vianna writes of his ongoing travels to the southernmost country in Europe: “My love for this land is profound—this land which welcomes me every summer making me feel that I am one of its own.” In his introduction, Flores-Vianna, a contributing photographer for MILIEU, honors the memory of a late friend and colleague who continues to be a living presence for him. EVEN BEFORE THIS NEW HOUSE was built, it came with a decorative accessory that would have to be accommodated: Lake Michigan. The moment interior designer Victoria Hagan began her work on the rooms and just as architect Randy Correll started to draw the plans for what would be a new home on a lot in Winnetka, Illinois, they both knew that the great body of water on which the residence was sited would be a detail that dictated the design, inside and out. WHILE IT WAS LOVE that compelled a New York arts patron to relocate to Charlotte, North Carolina, it was interior designer Cindy Smith who made the transition feel so seamless. Smith had decorated four of the woman’s previous residences and just happened to be living in the “Queen City,” a fond nickname for Charlotte. So, when her longtime client showed up one day, married to one of the city’s native sons, there was no question about who would decorate her new home. With six grown children between them, the newlyweds settled on a sprawling English cottage–style residence designed by prominent Charlotte architect Martin Evans Boyer and built in 1923. It is 11 a.m., and the unmistakable beat of a helicopter announces itself overhead. In short order, another arrives directly from the airport at Monaco and settles onto the helipad at La Bastide de Moustiers. An arrival on this scale ought not to be a surprise, because this property is owned by Alain Ducasse, the grand fromage of French chefs. The story of this place began in 1994 with Ducasse riding a motorcycle through the Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdun), a destination in southeastern France often considered the Grand Canyon of Europe, with its 2,100-foot jagged limestone cliffs that form a river canyon. The best experiences of the outdoors were found indoors at the 33rd annual Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville in February.
