How did you first get into quilting? I wouldn’t say I got into quilting properly until after the birth of my second son. I had pretty bad depression and was trying to hold onto anything that brought me joy, even in the smallest way. I remembered enjoying sewing so I hopped onto Pinterest, trying to find a project to make. After that first quilt (a free pattern from Nicole Daksiewicz of Modern Handcraft) I felt like I was coming back to myself a little bit. So then I made another quilt, and another, and another. IN THE KNOW Working with non-traditional fabrics, or upcycling, is not only an important aspect of the sustainable quilting movement, but it is also a lot of fun. Through upcycling we can take objects that may no longer be used or wanted and transform them into new, valued pieces of art. Here are some things to consider (and a few tips) for quilting with fabrics other than quilting cottons. WHAT TO USE While there are the occasional linens, linen blends, woven and shot cottons found in quilting, quilts are for the most part made with quilting cotton.
