A once barren patch of sandy council land in Perth has been transformed into a leafy haven by local residents who are urging others to establish their own thriving fruit and vegetable patches. Perth town planner and guerrilla gardener, Greg Smith, started the movement by planting some lemon-scented gums followed by chillies, parsley, avocadoes, pomegranates, garlic, as well as, guava, fig and lemon trees. The garden spans the full length of the house next door with Mr Smith boasting, “We’ve changed the nature of this space... it’s given the town a utopian space, rather than a dystopian space which it was before, like a desert.” Smith reported that the local council had been largely supportive despite the unofficial nature of the area.
