SWM have updated their RS 300R and RS 500R enduro models for 2021 with a bold new yellow and black livery, while under-the-skin changes for the Italian-made four-stroke singles include revised engine mapping and a stronger subframe. The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship has released their first provisional calendar for 2021. Responding to - and anticipating developments in - the COVID-19 situation, the 13-round calendar includes major changes over the typical WSBK schedule. Chief amongst these is moving all the flyaway rounds, including Australia, Argentina and an all-new venue – Mandalika – in Indonesia to the tail end of the 2021 season as WSBK confirms a “Europe-first” schedule. A date for the Australian round is yet to be confirmed, but a decision is expected by no later than August. The 13-round calendar concludes with a final TBC round, which given its position after the other flyaways, could mean Sepang or Buriram, although Qatar is more likely, given earlier statements that a “Middle East” circuit is being considered.…

While much of the pre-sale attention at Shannons’ Spring Timed Online Auction this past November was on late models Ducatis, including a Desmosedici RR, 916 Senna II, MHR Mille and 750 Sport, the stars instead turned out to be a collection of veteran and vintage motorcycles. From the collection of Victoria’s Warren Hicks, the six bikes, all being offered with no reserve, included machines from England, Germany, Belgium and the USA. The newest was a C1925 unit and the oldest from C1906. That oldest unit was a Zenith Bi-Car, which has been described as the only surviving example worldwide. Ahead of its Australian launch, BMW has released details on the upgraded G 310 R for 2021. BMW’s LAMS-legal roadster, the G 310 R gets several minor updates for the new year, starting with the addition of automatic idle boost and an electromotive throttle controller on the 313cc liquid-cooled singlecylinder engine. The former automatically raises idle speed when starting to reduce stalling, while the latter offers more sensitive throttle response. Maximum outputs of 25kW at 9500rpm and 28Nm at 7500rpm are unchanged from the current model. Another new part of the MY21 G 310 R’s specification is a self-boosting anti-hopping clutch that reduces engine drag torque, particularly during braking manoeuvres when downshifting. A lighter clutch lever operation is a secondary benefit, allowing smoother and easier shifting through the six-speed gearbox.…

BMW Motorrad’s presence in the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship will double in 2021 following confirmation that two satellite teams will run the new BMW M 1000 RR alongside the factory squad. The teams, RC Squadra Corse and Bonovo Action, will field one rider each, with Eugene Laverty switching to RC Squadra Corse after losing his BMW factory ride to Michael van der Mark for 2021, while former grand prix rider Jonas Folger will line up for Bonovo Action. RC Squadra Corse formerly ran as MV Agusta Reparto Corse in World Supersport, and while the signing of Laverty will see the Irishman on somewhat familiar machinery for 2021, he had a wretched 2020 season on the factory BMW S 1000 RR, with only two top-ten finishes, although he did claim…

Yamaha are bringing an upgraded MT-07 to market in 2021, with improvements and new features applied to both the 655cc LAMS and 689cc full power versions of the ‘Maximum Torque’ naked parallel twin. New features common to both variants include a restyled headlight assembly, reshaped fuel tank and redesigned ‘winglet’ air intakes. The fuel tank covers are now lighter, too, thanks to injection-moulded plastic construction, while new 3D textured gripper panels on the tank allow greater rider control. To improve manoeuvrability at low speeds, the MT-07’s handlebars are now 32mm wider, and while the overall riding position remains upright, Yamaha say they’ve fine-tuned the ergonomics for improved rider control and extra comfort. Since its release in 2017, Honda’s CMX500 bobber-style cruiser has seen more than 25,000 annual sales globally. Now, the LAMSapproved CMX500 has a big brother - the CMX1100. Unveiled in November, the CMX1100 is essentially an up-engined version of the CMX500, offering similar overall dimensions, including seat height, wheelbase, length and width, but packing in an engine with more than twice the capacity. That engine is the same 1084cc watercooled parallel twin used in the Africa Twin adventure tourer, but re-tuned to deliver the bottom-end torque expected in a cruiser. If you’re of a certain age and remember lusting after a Suzuki RGV250, Kawasaki KR1-S or Yamaha TZR250 in your youth, you’ll be pleased – and perhaps surprised – to hear that the two-stroke road bike is back.
