Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea has confirmed he’ll take part in this year’s Suzuka 8 Hours. The three-time WSBK champion will make his return to the endurance event alongside Kazuma Watanabe and Leon Haslam on a ZX-10RR for the factory ‘Kawasaki Team Green’ squad. “Suzuka is the biggest test for man and machine,” Rea said. “It’s like an emotional roller coaster during the race and I am very excited to go back this season.” Both Rea and Haslam are past Suzuka winners: Rea in 2012 with Honda; and Haslam in 2013 and 2014, also with Honda. While it can no longer lay claim to being the greatest, it has evolved significantly over the years and is still a fantastic multi-use bike. Honda already had a long (and somewhat chequered) history with 90° V4 motorcycles prior to the 1998 introduction of the VFR800. In fact it was way back in 1982 when Honda introduced the VF750S, which was replaced a year later by the sportier VF750F. But the V4 engine proved fickle, with issues including fast-wearing cam chain adjusters and upper cylinder lubrication issues that resulted in pitted camshafts. These issues were resolved with the launch of the VFR750 in 1986, which featured a redesigned 90° V4 with much more reliable gear-driven cams. After confirming their split from Yamaha on 22 February, Herve Poncharal’s Tech3 MotoGP team revealed on 5 March that they had signed a three-year deal with KTM, effective from the 2019 MotoGP season, which will see them serve as an official satellite team alongside the factory outfit. The deal will see Tech3 riders on a KTM RC16 that’s the same spec as the factory bikes, not year-old machinery like they got with Yamaha. These Falco Mix to 2 Adv boots are part of the new generation of so-called “Adventure” boots. Presumably, they are to be worn when one is riding upon the earth having adventures and stuff. I’m also pretty sure those so-called Adventure bikes are meant to figure in that scenario. Before the advent of boots such as these, hard-core Adventure riders were obliged to wear dedicated dirtbike boots or comfortable boat shoes – neither of which really did the Adventure job all that well. Dirt-bike boots are great if you’re doing serious dirt, hard enduro, or motocross. They offer unrivalled protection, but the trade-off is a rigidity that makes them kinda hard to do anything but ride Erzberg when you have them on. And they are certainly not designed for walking.…

The MY18 version of Honda’s middleweight CBR500R has arrived, with the LAMS-legal supersports machine carrying over familiar mechanical specification, but bringing three new colours. New for 2018 are a choice of Graphite Black, Grand Prix Red or two-tone Pearl Metalloid White/Grand Prix Red paint finishes. The 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin DOHC engine is unchanged, producing a claimed 34.4kW and 42.4Nm, as well as good fuel economy from the 15.7-litre fuel tank. The 41mm front fork has external preload adjusters (added for the MY16 version), while the Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension offers nine-stage preload adjustability. Milwaukee Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty will miss at least three rounds of this year’s Motul FIM Superbike World Championship following a heavy crash at Round 2 in Buriram, Thailand. On the fourth lap of Race 2 at Buriram, Laverty went down and was hit from behind by Jordi Torres’s Ducati, which left the Irishman with a pelvis fractured in two places. Following treatment at the scene, Laverty was transferred to a Bangkok hospital to begin his recovery. While the fractures did not need surgery, Laverty was operated on to repair internal injuries incurred in the crash. Laverty is now home in Ireland to continue his recovery. While pelvic fractures can take up to four months to heal properly, the 31-year-old will push that timeframe, aiming to be fit for Round 6…
