Dear Reader, When the call for designs went out for this issue in April 2020, we didn’t yet fully understand the scope of the pandemic. Yes, travel was on hold and toilet paper was scarce, but surely within a few months, things would be up and running again. The chosen theme of Home & Away felt optimistic: a nod to future travels mixed with plenty of knitting to keep things cozy at home. And while I am starting to feel optimistic again about a future where travel is possible, this past year has left me heavy with nostalgia for hopping on a plane, jumping in a car, and exploring new places. I’m a millennial; I grew up with computers and the internet as a significant part of my childhood and adolescence. If I don’t have knitting or spinning in my hands, it’s likely that I have my phone. I’m scrolling through Ravelry, creating mood boards, jotting down notes for future designs, or documenting my process for my social media platforms. The internet, which is fully integrated into my fiber arts, offers a fast-paced counterpart to the slower-paced act of making. I launched my business, Mother of Purl, five years ago. What started as a commissioned knitting brand has grown into a hub for my own knitwear designs, online classes, and handspun yarn.
