THE BRIEF Outgrowing a home designed with small children in mind, a Brisbane couple decided to renovate for their teenagers’ changing needs. Interior designer Angie McKay of Brisbane-based Douglas Carroll Design says everyone’s priorities became clear during the planning process. “The kitchen is the most important room in the house for this family. THE BRIEF This turn-of-the-century apartment is an homage to the rich and artistic history of Manhattan’s East Village. The sympathetic restoration is the handiwork of architects Tal Schori and Rustam-Marc Mehta, founding partners of GRT Architects. Situated in a former theatre district, the apartment had an original layout featuring a segregated 19th-century design. The kitchen, in particular, inhabited a very dark corner and lacked connection with the living and dining areas. THE DETAILS Tempering the apartment’s historical context with current notions of light and space was a delicate balancing act.
