March is a pretty great time of year, don’t you think? Apart from it being my birthday (true story), and the weather being just the right temperature, it’s also the time of year that I feel most positive about the months ahead. I’ve recovered from the Christmas and New Year festivities, and I’m ready and raring to take on a new project. This issue is all about getting stuff done. First up, kitchens. So many decisions, so little time. But we love the process. I’m currently trying to decide whether I’m game enough to go for a decorative tile, and I genuinely don’t know which way I’ll go, but the research is the fun bit. THE ORIGINAL ‘Tolix’ stool by Xavier Pauchard The form: A pressed and welded metal stacking stool with a simple cross brace and hand hole. What makes it special: Designed in 1934 by Frenchman Xavier Pauchard, the stool was one of a family of metal furniture pieces that made the most of the d rability of a specific galvanised pressed sheet metal process. This process ensured that the furniture suited a variety of applications, from airports, cafeterias and hospitals to outdoor areas gardens and parks. The chairs and stools appeared at the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life, held in 1937 in Paris. By the end of the 1950s, Tolix was producing 60,000 units yearly.
