“I HAVE A CONFESSION,” I told Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes. Then I came clean. “You renewed the same book for how long?” she asked. “Ten years.” In June 2005, my then-husband and I joined a gourmet group, which took turns hosting dinner. HAVE YOU HEARD THE ONE about the Limestone Comedy Festival? The one about the June 4–6 showcase that draws national comedians to Bloomington? It begins at a cable company. That’s where Jared Thompson worked. But when his job left town, he and his wife Dayna did what any reasonable couple would do during the 2008 recession: They opened a comedy club. The Comedy Attic was the city’s first full-time place for laughs, although it wasn’t the first to feature quality stand-up. Bloomington was already on the map thanks to Comedy Caravan, which ran at Bear’s Place for nearly 30 years and hosted the likes of Roseanne Barr and Ellen DeGeneres. AFTER GOVERNOR MIKE PENCE APPROVED THE amendment to Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act in April, clarifying that the law would not allow discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, the question still remained: Could, for example, a florist with religious objections still refuse service to a same-sex couple planning a wedding? The answer: In some places, perhaps. The “fix” amendment only affects LGBT residents living in areas where those anti-discrimination ordinances are already in place, including Indianapolis, Bloomington, and South Bend. In its original form, RFRA would have overridden the local safeguards.
