The main issue is not whether the GDP growth figures are actually higher or lower, but that common everyday experience is not reflected in the numbers released by India’s statistical establishment. The master of Hindi detective fiction, with about 300 titles to his credit, remembers the first time he ever read a murder mystery. It was in Delhi, in 1954, when Surender Mohan Pathak was a teenager.
