The beauty of Kisawa Sanctuary lies in its equal focus on design integrity and luxury travel, as well as its commitment to wildlife conservation and its focus on the natural environment in which it is located. Testament to this is the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (aka BCSS), located just a few miles north, on the opposite end of the island. ‘The abstract “essence-and-feel” of a place is what we always try to define through design. Here, at Singita Kwitonda, we wanted to reflect the power of the black volcanic vertical mountains, and the orange lava juxtaposed with the lush jungle. It’s a bold and powerful place, inhabited by gorillas who are both strong and gentle. We were struck by the serious responsibility Singita sits with by being a part of the conservation efforts to help these rare animals, so our design narrative had to be spot on. It was my online yoga and meditation lessons that kept me from tumbling down a dark hole during that first lockdown of 2020. Curtailing our lives, mourning loved ones, losing income has been hard. Without the usual distraction of coffee dates, languid weekend lunches and office water cooler chats, it was easy to lose a grip. But we found ways to cope. A large part of what got me through came from the breathing techniques which have been integral to yoga practice for centuries. While the national animal is the unassuming shrew, the island nation is rich in diverse wildlife, with many species endemic to the region, including the São Tomé giant tree frog, the ocean tree frog, São Tomé cobra, the São Tomé leaf-nosed bat, the guinea lidless skink, the giant sunbird (world’s largest sunbird) and the dwarf olive ibis (world’s smallest ibis) among many others.
