THE Close Brothers Handicap Chase – once the Racing Post Chase – has an amazing list of past winners, including Pendil, Combs Ditch, Rhyme ‘N Reason, Desert Orchid, Docklands Express, Rough Quest and Gloria Victi, but in recent years it has not attracted quite that calibre of horse.
However, that has not put Tom George off the race, which is worth more than £42,000 to the winner. And, having won it twice with the grey Nacarat, he returned on Saturday to win it with Clondaw Castle who, like Nacarat the first time he won it, was being tried at three miles for the first time.
