NEW LEADERS FOR BRITISH PARA TEAM THE British Equestrian Federation (BEF) has a new para dressage performance manager and performance pathway manager in Georgina Sharples and Erik Mackechnie-Guire. Ms Sharples is a former head of performance at Paralympics GB, while Mr Mackechnie-Guire served as para-equestrian high performance manager for Team Australia. Event Horse Owners Association chairman Cathy Butler has announced her retirement. Cathy, who has served for nearly seven years, will step down at the end of June. Racing owner Michael O’Leary is to wind down racing operations at Gigginstown House Stud. The stud, home of Grand National winner Tiger Roll, will be run down over a four- or five-year period. CHRIS JERDIN (CJ) is a great believer in fate. His career began with a chance visit to Doug Marks’ racing yard in Lambourn, aged 15. He accepted a job offer, even though his riding experience was “a donkey ride on Blackpool beach, where someone’s holding you and their tails are tied together”. So Doug taught him to ride, and lit the fire for CJ’s 50 years as a stable lad. After a long stint with Fulke Walwyn, CJ moved to Oliver Sherwood’s yard for nearly 30 years before retiring aged 65 on 27 April this year, the day of the jump racing finale at Sandown. WHEN Avril Bartolomy turned 50, she bought herself a “little cob just to hack around”. Advised at a lesson that the horse would make a show cob, Avril entered the showing world. In 2006 her husband bought Clantara Shadow Play (Sage) as a three-year-old. The Percheron/thoroughbred has taken Avril all the way to the Royal International (RIHS) and Horse of the Year Show. “He’s not only a dream horse for an amateur, he’d be a dream horse for a professional, too,” says Avril. “He knows his job in the ring and he gets on with it.” Sage is 16 this year and is taking the senior classes by storm, having already qualified for the Olympia final. CHATSWORTH was a reminder of how lucky we are as a sport to be welcomed into the parks of magnificent historic houses. These settings are invaluable to event sponsors, horse owners and audiences. On that note, it’s a blow to hear that after 40 years Belton will no longer run. The venue is comparable to Chatsworth and the like, although while it has long been popular with competitors, it initially attracted comparatively few spectators. Stuart Buntine later took advantage of its prime setting and has since grown it into a real spectacle. WITH less than a month of the 2018/19 campaign left to run, we are now into what I describe as the “should we, shouldn’t we?” period of the season. This is the time when the moisture levels in the ground are rapidly decreasing, if not already non-existent, and when human intervention is often the determinant as to whether a horse runs or not. I am referring to ground preparation — such as watering and agri-vating — and whether it has been satisfactorily undertaken for the loving owner or nervous trainer to allow their pride and joy to have one last outing of the season. For me it is probably the worst time of the season. Obviously I am keen to continue the quest for winners right up until the season…

WHAT would you do if you found three masked men in your garden at two in the morning? Make a citizen’s arrest? Chase them away? I suppose most of us would call the police, but that isn’t always an option in our neck of the woods. If someone decides to commit a crime, what with patchy mobile signal and just one policeman on duty miles away, it can feel a bit like the Wild West. While we were all asleep on Wednesday night, our friend and neighbouring farmer, Colin, was facing a nasty conundrum. EQUINE hoarding is a major problem that is poorly understood, experts have warned. The topic was among those discussed at the Scottish Welfare Conference on 17 May. The definition of hoarding is important, said mental health nurse Bronwen Williams, adding object hoarding is different to animal hoarding, which can get out of control very quickly. “Hoarding occurs when a number of animals are not cared for adequately,” said Ms Williams. “Keeping a large number of animals is not indicative of hoarding, the bar is lower than we might think. It doesn’t have to be hundreds, there could be 12.” Ms Williams said hoarders can fall into categories including “overwhelmed care-givers”, if an owner may have undergone a major life change including redundancy or bereavement, or people who are “mission driven”…

A PHILANTHROPIST and stalwart of the equestrian world, Mrs Tice died at home surrounded by family, friends and a loyal spaniel on 26 April aged 86. Brought up in Grafton country, she studied at Moulton Agricultural College and her family home was at Vale Farm in Ashton, Northants, home to a dairy and some top racehorses. These included Clear Profit, who ran in her father’s colours to finish third in the 1960 Grand National and whom Mrs Tice rode in point-to-points. She married hop farmer James Tice in 1959. In 1972, she moved to Teeton Hall in the heart of the Pytchley Saturday country, becoming joint-master in 1990 and serving for 12 years, walking hound puppies until recently. It goes alongside slapping the horse’s neck quite hard on both sides, with numerous exclamations of “good boy” — one can almost see the horse wince. If you watch horses with each other, the most they do is nibble their companion’s neck. Therefore, a tiny gesture, such as a gentle scratch on the neck near the withers, is quite sufficient. And I can’t think of anyone in the equestrian world who has turned their career around more dramatically over the past few years than jockey Harry Skelton. When he left Paul Nicholls’ stables in 2012, he’d ridden just eight winners all season. And I’m certain that as other jockeys were preferred to him, it wounded Harry’s self-belief. IT was a shame that the mud was the biggest talking point of Royal Windsor this year. It’s such a fabulous venue and a show that is so special to many. Full marks to the organisers who worked tirelessly to keep the show running; it could have easily been cancelled. Aren’t we lucky to have great all-weather working-in arenas and some surfaced rings? Once parked up, the only slight hassle was the walkways, which were churned up. We saw some ingenious ways of keeping horses’ legs clean, including bin liners. I myself took some inspiration from this and wore two Tesco bags taped over my leather boots, much to the amusement of my fellow competitors. SAM BURTON set his alarm for an early call and it paid dividends, as he picked up the mount on Redkalani, who won the club members’ nine-year-olds and over conditions race. He was waiting on the chance of a ride at Bratton Down, which didn’t materialise. However, his phone rang with owner-trainer Viv Lloyd offering him the opportunity on his 11-year-old gelding. Sam was rewarded when Redkalani beat Gersjoeycasey (Phil York) by five lengths to give Viv, who has owned winners before, a first training success. The winning rider said: “I had set my alarm for 7.30am and the phone rang. It was an unknown number and I said I will ride it, so it was very lucky.”…

SOCIAL MEDIA is a “force for good” but can bring great challenges, World Horse Welfare CEO Roly Owers warned, as a rise in “free to good home” horses adds to the hoarding problem. “There is a growing trend in people advertising unwanted horses where they are often rehomed to unregistered sanctuaries or taken in by individuals who often become the overwhelmed care giver or rescue-mission-type hoarders,” said Mr Owers. “In some cases, social media has fuelled this trend by providing nationwide reach for these individuals and amplifying the belief that they are the solution to rescue unwanted animals who are being failed by the large welfare agencies and charities. A RIDER who learned to spend quiet time with her horses after she was injured in a fall is offering Clydesdale meditation. Katherine Beaumont was unable to walk for three months after she broke her pelvis, so started sitting in her horses’ fields to spend time with them. She found it “transformative”, adding: “Now we do things together because we want to, not by putting pressure on them.” Katherine runs the sessions at Whasdyke Farm, in the Lake District, which also offers Clydesdale trekking and driving. She explains that the horses help people “come into a place of stillness and peace, and access inner creativity”. “Horses are very good at dealing with people’s grief, and because the Clydesdales are big and awesome, they feel parented and protected,” Katherine said.…

KAREN WILLIAMS runs a small livery yard from her 10-acre property in Kent. Alongside her own horses, she has four liveries with six horses between them. “I like the social side, as do my girls who love the company of the other children,” says Karen. “The liveries know my own horses well and will happily look after them if I go away on holiday, which is fabulous peace of mind. “They also help with the day-to-day costs of keeping my own horses.
