SHOULD Thistlecrack follow up his King George victory with the Gold Cup in March, he would put his breeders, Robin and Scarlett Knipe, into a club so exclusive it has, so far, just one member.
Only the famed Irish horseman Joe Osborne has bred two winners of the Cheltenham showpiece from different mares, providing Silver Fame (1951) and Ten Up (1975). The Knipes, based at Cobhall Court Stud in Herefordshire, already have one Gold Cup winner, the 1995 hero Master Oats, to their credit.
Thistlecrack is out of the Ardross mare Ardstown, who ran in the Knipes’ colours and was trained by them for most of her career, starting in point-to-points. She won three times between the flags and took Hunter Chases at Stratford, Chepstow and Leicester. With pointing disrupted…
