THE same day that Michael Jung won his third European title and € 18,000 (£12,780), Scott Brash (pictured, right) was pocketing € 1m (£707,000) in showjumping’s new Rolex Grand Slam, as well as the C$500,000 (£251,000) first prize for winning the final leg, the Spruce Meadows grand prix.
Badminton, Burghley and Kentucky devised the eventing slam in 1998, with Rolex later coming in as sponsor. The eventing slam bonus was raised to $350,000 (£234,000) in 2008, having initially been $250,000 (£167,000).
After HSBC dropped out of the FEI Classics in 2013 the FEI underpinned the series prize money, although the winner now receives only $40,000 (£26,800), having previously pocketed $150,000 (£100,000). The FEI is still looking for a sponsor.
