If you’re shopping for a piece of furniture or larger item, make sure you’ve taken your measurements beforehand. You’ll need to measure the space it’s going to fit in, as well as doors or entrances that it will need to pass through. Take a tape measure with you while shopping, so you can make sure your chosen item will fit. Make sure you check your piece thoroughly. Often, vintage items won’t be immaculate and that’s all part of the charm, but you don’t want to get home to find that drawers or doors don’t open, or that it has woodworm. You don’t need to use a room for what it’s originally designed for. Changing the master bedroom into a second living room has given us a more private space upstairs and one with lovely light too. Always try to maximise storage. This has been essential for us in this narrow house. I’ve found there are always clever ways to add a drawer or a lid. When I built our diner bench for instance, I made it so that the seat lifted up and I could put Kiki’s toys and our shoes and bags inside. Add colour. Before decorating, make a moodboard. It’s a good way of checking that the scheme works. It’s also useful to share it on Instagram to show how things can go together that you wouldn’t think would work. The finishing touches and added extras come later once the main elements have been put in place. In my last house, my style was a little crazier, so I had loads of different types of cushions. Use painter’s tape to stop any paint bleeding underneath and to ensure that you get a crisp, neat edge. It’s been designed for exactly this purpose! The geometric look that Hester went for is an excellent way to start with murals in your home as there’s no design planning needed: simply mark off random shapes with the tape on a clean floor. Give each shape two coats of floor paint for durability and resist the urge to peel the tape too soon! Let each coat dry overnight to be on the safe side. You will need • Wooden chairs • Sandpaper • Cloth • Masking tape • Furniture paint • Paintbrush 1 Sand the chairs to remove any existing paint or varnish, then clean thoroughly with a cloth. 2 For a half-painted effect, first mask off the legs of the chair with tape. Apply a coat of furniture paint over the seat and chair back, and leave to dry. Apply a second coat, and then remove the masking tape from the legs. 3 For an ombré effect, choose three tonal colours of paint and brush the lightest on the back section of the chair. Choose a wallpaper that’s easier to hang, such as a ‘paste the wall’ design, which comes with adhesive so you don’t need to paste the back of the paper as well.
