Choose a base that complements the rest of the layout. Sarah has chosen a simple spotted tablecloth that balances out her bright colours, but you could choose a bright patterned cloth and layer with more neutral colours, or you could leave your tabletop uncovered for a rustic country-style look. It’s essential to set a timeline when you’re project managing. We gave ourselves four months to renovate the house so getting a time frame for jobs from the various trades ensured all the materials were ordered on time. Having the smoke-stained uPVC windows spray painted rather than replaced has totally transformed the front of the house. It cost about £250 for a medium-sized window and we’ll be getting the company back to do the rear of the house as well. GET ORGANISED ‘When you’re working from home, good storage and organisation is essential. I bought this old sideboard from eBay for just £40 with the intention of upcycling it. Cut most of your foliage stems diagonally to about 16cm and leave a few of the more delicate stems slightly longer than this. If you want to create an aged, vintage-style effect on wood surfaces, use fine sandpaper to distress the piece. For an authentic look, concentrate on areas that would naturally get a bit of wear and tear, like corners and edges. Apply light pressure – it’s better to build up the look gradually. Sanding is also a great way to achieve a smooth finish, but go lightly. Give depth to your furniture piece with the two-tone distress technique. Apply two different colours on top of one another; wait to dry and lightly sand the top layer, which will reveal the first colour layer underneath, instead of the woodwork. This was our first project and it turned out to be massive, but by being patient and doing the research, we managed to finish everything we set out to do, and we did it well!
