Ginamarie Riley has a penchant for drawing out the essence of a home. With six renovations under her belt, the Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland owner of Sandringham homeware store Ornament knows a thing or two about enhancing a dwelling’s beauty. The mum of two bought her first house at 24 — a bungalow do-up. THE PROJECT With architect Julian Guthrie and Axiom Projects, marketing and art consultant Sue Waymouth and her husband Ben renovated this four-bedroom home in Auckland's Herne Bay for themselves and their two teenage children. Sue Waymouth was working in the front garden of the Herne Bay, Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland villa she shares with her husband Ben and their here-again, gone-again teenage children when one of those unexpected slice-of-life moments landed in her everyday. The original owner of the home, a woman in her 80s, came by with her carer. “She told me how she kissed her first boyfriend beneath the camellia tree,” says Sue. HOMES THE PROJECT Architecture practice Bureaux and Alistair Raw of Raw Landscape & Build renovated this threebedroom home in Auckland's Herne Bay for a couple and their two-year-old son. Although a causal link between a ’90s Smashing Pumpkins concert and the award-winning renovation of this heritage home can’t definitively be made, neither can its influence be ruled out. A getting-to-knowyou phase usually comes first in any client-architect relationship, but when collaborating on the update of this circa-1906 villa in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland’s Herne Bay, Bureaux’s Maggie Carroll was able to skip all that.
