VERANDA THE OWNERS Alex Chouler and Tabby Robertshaw WHERE Stanford, Western Cape SIZE 121m² (veranda and lawn area with fire pit) When Tabby and Alex started dreaming of a new farmhouse on their regenerative farm outside Stanford, a wraparound veranda was top of their wish list. Goodluck Homestead is a working livestock and vegetable farm, and from the original farmhouse one could gaze across rolling meadows towards Hermanus and all the way to the Kleinrivier Mountains in the distance. But there was no veranda from which to enjoy these views. The old farmhouse was demolished in October 2022 and thanks to a generous loan from the farm's investors, Tabby and Alex's dream of replacing it with a new income-generating farmhouse could become a reality. Landscape designer Deidre Causton of Inspirations in Johannesburg offers the following advice: • For raised planters against a boundary wall, make sure the wall can take the weight of the bricks and soil. You may have to reinforce it or build a waterproofed skim wall adjacent to it. If you're unsure, consult an engineer or master builder. • If you're building raised planters from brick, a foundation for the brickwork is necessary. • Drainage is vital, so leave the bottom of the beds open to the ground. This will allow water to drain away, roots to grow into the soil and earthworms to enter. Include weepholes to prevent a build-up of water. Poor drainage in garden beds and on lawns can be a problem, leading to the rotting of plant roots and poor soil quality. You especially don't want water to accumulate close to your house as it can lead to rising damp, as was the case with the Jardines. Poor drainage usually arises on properties where there's no natural slope that allows water to run offor when the soil structure doesn't allow water to drain away quickly enough, as is the case with clay soil. A French drain is a good way to solve this problem.
