My flowers keep falling Vernon Cloete of George writes When I moved to George about two years ago, I planted a small guavadilla and looked after it well, fertilising it occasionally with LAN, Superphosphate and Bounce Back. It flowered after a year-and-a-half but it only produced about 20 flowers and six small fruit that didn’t ripen. I put this down to the fact that there were few bees to pollinate the flowers. PAPRIKA PORK CHOPS WITH CAULI-MASH Serves 4 • 4 pork loin chops (skin on, bone in)• 15ml smoked paprika• 5ml each coriander and cumin seeds• 3ml brown sugar• 5ml sea salt flakes• fresh thyme MASH • 1 head of cauliflower, sliced and boiled • 30ml butter • 200g bacon bits, fried • 125ml cream or milk 1 Preheat the oven to 170°C. Q: I’m growing ‘Pearl of Bedfordview’ standard roses in front of a hedge and they aren’t thriving. Will fertilising help? The hedge doesn’t allow enough light to reach the rose and competes for nutrition. In spring, they start growing together but in the summer heat the hedge has stronger roots. Dig a hole next to the rose to check; if it is root competition, wait until next month then dig up the roses, plant them in large pots and sink them into the ground. Lift the pots every three months to prevent the hedge roots from growing into the pot. Trim the hedge to let in more light.
