Who remembers continental pillows? If, like me, you grew up in the ’80s, this décor item will be imprinted in your memory. In our home in Belmont Street, continental pillows were big news (literally and figuratively); all the beds had one – or more! Since his passing, the tree has stopped bearing almonds and in the past year it has started bending to one side. My heart breaks to see the tree in this position. Its stem is covered in hundreds of little blooms that start off white and then turn light-green over time. A green crown on top of each flower stalk gives it the appearance of a pineapple, hence its common name. Tips for a fynbos garden • When planting fynbos species, dig a big enough hole, mix the soil that comes out of the hole with compost, put the plant in the hole and fill it with the compost mixture. Sprinkle a mulch around the plant and water well; you can add Seagro fertiliser to the water. For the first two years, you must water the plant regularly, but after that you’ll only need to water it during the hot summer months. • Feed your plants with an organic fertiliser such as Bio Ocean from Atlantic Fertilisers. • Not all plants grow well and survive. Mulching the soil is one of the most waterwise strategies a gardener can follow and it is especially beneficial for roses. A layer of mulch keeps the soil cool and moist for longer, which roses love, and encourages microscopic soil life which also benefits the roses because these micro-organisms aerate the soil and release nutrients. From a water-usage perspective, mulch reduces evaporation so that regular, deep watering is more effective. It also inhibits weeds which compete with roses for water and nutrients.
