1 Summer planting
Annuals help fill spaces in a new garden and gaps in an existing border. They brighten entrances, patios, containers and hanging baskets. Go bold or go pastel with annuals such as ageratum, celosia, dianthus, gazania, marigold, petunia, salvia, verbena, vinca and zinnia.
The low, spreading growth habit of sun-loving alyssum, nierembergia, portulaca and verbena is ideal for edgings, slopes and between paving.
For the back of the border, plant the spider plant (Cleome) with narrow white and pink petals and long seed pods, lavatera with its cup-shaped pink and white flowers, and salpiglossis with trumpet-shaped flowers in red, pink, purple and yellow.
