1 Sow seeds Sowing seeds is a quick and easy way to multiply your plants. Both perennials and annuals can grow from seed. Sow seeds of perennials such as Penstemon digitalis, Verbascum hybrids and Aquilegia just after they have flowered and set seed. The seeds of annuals should be sown about three months before you want the plants to bloom. Keep the flowering season of the specific plant in mind when you sow their seeds. 1 Raised beds The advantage of having raised beds in your garden is that you have control over the soil mixture best suited to what you intend to grow. They are particularly suited to growing vegetables, but can also be used for herbs and plants that require specific soils. Raised beds can be built from wooden sleepers, concrete blocks or bricks and filled with a mixture of topsoil, compost and rotted manure. Beds should be a comfortable height and allow easy access to the centre without stretching. Q: I’d like to train a climbing rose up the front of my house between two bedroom windows. What do you recommend? Choose climbing roses that aren’t very vigorous growers, especially if the space between the windows is limited. I would suggest roses such as ‘Wedding Garland’, ‘Rose Celeste’, ’Pink Spectacle’, ‘Don Juan’, ‘Edgar Degas’ or ‘Isidingo’. Q: Which fertiliser do my roses need? The leaves are changing colour, eventually turning brown (see above). I stay in Blaauwbergrandt, Cape Town and spray weekly. Any advice? The problem is insufficient aeration at root level and not disease. I once bought my mother an almond ricotta lemon tart shaped in a perfect heart, the almonds layered immaculately like scales and dusted with icing sugar. It was almost too beautiful to eat.
