Turkish rapper Ezhel dodged some serious jail time recently after an Istanbul court acquitted him for charges of “inciting cannabis use through social media postings as well as song lyric,” according to the New Arab. The trial lasted a mere nine minutes before the judge called it for Ezhel, whose real name is Omer Sercan Ipekcioglu. Ezhel had been collared by narcs in May, who were likely not enamored of the Ankaraborn songwriter’s 2017 debut album Muptezhel, which translates to “drug user” in Turkish slang. Since Ezhel had released the record on his own, absent a major label, he faced criminal charges alone. For years, visitors to Denver could enjoy a nice relaxing bus tour in peace, the experience elevated by a certain legal product. But the city recently cracked down on a couple of cannabis-bus tour operators—namely My 420 Tours and Colorado Cannabis Tours—as Denver cops went undercover to bust 31 tourists and bus employees for public consumption, with one driver arrested to boot. A city spokesman told Colorado Public Radio that law enforcement was simply responding to complaints about public tokery, but when pressed for copies of those complaints, the city demurred, saying it needed secrecy to “protect the integrity of the current prosecutions.” The city claims that, since anyone can take a canna-bus, they are by definition a public space and therefore off-limits for pot consumption. IN 2016, WATERSHED elections doubled the number of legalized marijuana states and brought medical marijuana to three more. Since then, increasing majorities support legalization, with West Virginia passing a medical-cannabis law and Vermont and Canada having legalized recreational marijuana. Despite rising national support, efforts at marijuana-law reform have been stalled at the federal level (see sidebar). A recent edibles experiment has left me wondering why cannabis is not classified as a hallucinogen. Any thoughts? Cannabis doesn’t quite fit these criteria. Hallucinogens don’t work in the cannabinoid neurotransmitter system, either. A PILL OF GOODS Hey, I was hoping you might be able to test something for me. I’ve taken four drug tests and I’ve come up clean for marijuana. I believe it’s because I took extra strength Tylenol each time. I took three Tylenol the night before the tests and three the day of, and it worked. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper vetoed a trio of cannabis-themed bills recently, thereby arousing some anxiety in the state’s medical and business communities. One bill would have added autism to the list of acceptable medical-marijuana conditions, another would have made investing in cannabis more flexible and a third would have allowed dispensaries to offer their clients tasting rooms. In putting the kibosh on the autism provision, Hickenlooper argued that more research was required. “In vetoing this bill, we do so on sole concern that medical efficacy of MMJ to treat [autism spectrum disorder] has yet to be fully studied by medical professionals and scientific experts,” the governor wrote in a memo accompanying his veto. Getting marijuana reform done at the federal level means passing laws through Congress. Despite supermajority support for reform, bipartisan measures to change federal marijuana laws are often stymied by just one member of Congress. Most often, that reefer-mad roadblock is Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) in the US House of Representatives. Representative Sessions is not related to our diminutive attorney general, Jeff Sessions, except in their shared reefer madness. Like Jeff, Pete believes that marijuana is a gateway drug to heroin and that the “Just Say No” tactics of the 1980s actually worked.
