According to newly released data, the number of cases of “marijuana treatment” for failed THC tests is so over-prioritized in Philadelphia that the city is having difficulty arranging treatment for opioid addicts. The findings are based on data assembled via the city’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, as reported by philly.com. From 2011, the year that heroin deaths spiked sharply in Philly, through 2015, over 20 percent of the admissions to treatment centers were for cannabis use—and in some of those years, the people admitted to pot programs outnumbered those treated for deadly heroin addiction. In 2014, the city spent $28 million on 8,363 treatment admissions, with 1,844 being for marijuana, while just 1,764 were for heroin. According to national data, 60 percent of the people in…

Canada is fast becoming a leader in cannabis-law reform, with nationwide legalization set to take effect on July 1, 2018, according to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In anticipation, this past April, Billboard featured an array of quotes—along with suggested strain names—from over two dozen Canadian musical artists discussing the prospects of legal weed in the Great White North. Rush, arguably Canada’s greatest band, was represented by bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson. Lee came up with the legit-sounding “Lerxst Kush,” derived from Lifeson’s nickname. The lurid April 19 prison-cell suicide of NFL star turned killer Aaron Hernandez took yet another turn when it was reported by Newsweek that an autopsy of the former New England Patriots tight end revealed the presence of K2, a synthetic form of marijuana. However, days after the story broke, officials disclosed that Hernandez’s toxicology report showed he did not have K2 or any other illegal drugs in his system when he took his own life. Inmates at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts suggested that Hernandez, 27, may have smoked K2 the morning he hanged himself and officials were investigating whether Hernandez had used synthetic pot before his death. Police searched Hernandez’s cell, specifically looking for paper soaked with K2, a common method of smuggling the drug into…

Border Patrol agents near the town of Tombstone, Arizona, became suspicious of a man stopped while driving a shiny white hearse after he couldn’t keep his story straight. Asked about the “nature of the trip,” the 28-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, was unable to give a satisfactory answer—like, say, “funeral.” Citing inconsistencies in the driver’s story, agents called in the K9 unit, and a drug dog detected a suspicious odor. Agents then took the highly uncomfortable step of opening the casket in the back of the hearse. A powerful smell emerged from the coffin, but it wasn’t emitted by a recently deceased person. Not only will legal weed soon make billions of dollars—it can save billions as well. An April 2017 study published by Health Affairs predicts that legalizing medical marijuana nationwide would save the federal Medicaid program over $1 billion annually in prescription-drug expenditures. Basing their estimates on quarterly data derived from medical cannabis states for the years 2007–14, the researchers found that Medicaid saved $475.8 million. If all 50 states had legalized medical pot in 2014, the prescription-drug savings would have been a staggering $1.1 billion. According to the study, legalizing medical marijuana nationwide would lead to an 11 percent drop in pain meds, a 17 percent drop in nausea medication, and significant drops in both depression and anti-seizure medicines. Last November, 19-year-old Riley Hancey suffered a severe case of pneumonia that collapsed his lungs. He was told he needed a double-lung transplant to save his life. The trace amounts of THC found in his system were enough for the University of Utah Hospital to deny Riley the transplant. According to Riley’s father, Mark Hancey, a University of Utah doctor told the teen, “You will die. A pastor in Yeadon, Pennsylvania received an unexpected gift this 4/20 when UPS delivered a package containing 10 pounds of marijuana. AT PRESS TIME, the Trump administration is widely expected to name Representative Tom Marino (R-PA) as director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, a.k.a. the “Drug Czar,” and there’s been renewed discussion of making the ONDCP head a cabinet-level position in the executive branch, as it was from 1993 to 2009. Clearly, Representative Marino would be a terrible pick for the job.
