The stereotype of a heart attack victim – an overweight middle-aged man living largely on junk food – hides a worrying fact. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), of the 1.28 million 16- to 44-year-olds living with cardiovascular disease in the UK, 710, 000 are women while 570,000 are men. And statistics published by the Women’s Heart Foundation show that, under the age of 50, women’s heart attacks are twice as likely as men’s to be fatal.
