Author Gary Paul Johnston predicted handgun trends heading into the second millenium. He correctly anticipated more polymer-framed handgun designs would outnumber metal-framed pistols, notably with smaller models that package the 10-round limit on new magazines at that time. RED IS AN IRRITATING COLOR to the human brain. Red grabs our attention, which is why stop signs, red lights and sports cars all are bathed in it. Irritating doesn’t always mean a bad thing. In reference to gun sights, red is quick for the eye to pick up, for the brain to process and contrasts against almost every background, which makes it easy to distinguish red hues in the visible spectrum. Besides fiber optic sights, red is almost exclusively used in miniature reflex sights as the dot reticle. It’s so common, in fact, that “red dot sights” has become the collective label for this optic category. In the July-issue Proofhouse (pg. 68) featuring the Kimber KHX Custom .45 ACP, the grips were described as being Hogue’s new G10 Magrip that integrates a red laser sight developed by Crimson Trace. A scarce Casull Arms’ CA 2000 .22LR (one of approximately 900 made) went for a comfortable $2,000 plus premiums at a Sportsman’s Legacy sale on March 11, 2018. The gun came complete with its original (numbered) locking “book case,” which also contains an integral booklet signed by Dick Casull. Machined from stainless steel and featuring a satin finish, it has a 1¾-inch barrel, five-shot cylinder, folding trigger, internal hammer, external safety and Micarta grips. The revolver remains in at-least 99 percent condition, with only slight evidence of handling and firing. ZEISS IS THE OPTICS company that, in 1907, designed and made the first variable-power riflescope. From that first scope to present day, it has earned a reputation for making premium glass. What Zeiss has struggled with is to gain a strong presence in the American market. The majority of shooters here have never warmed up to European reticles, nor the higher cost for the scopes. There’s some good news with the introduction of Zeiss’ newest scope line: the Conquest V4. Rifleshooters should take notice as this line will slide across a gun store’s counter for $750 to $1,100. While not an inexpensive scope, it is nowhere near as expensive as other Zeiss product lines. Victory models can fetch more than $2,000, for example. Still, it’s a serious commitment for any…

BORN IN 1933, Buz Fawcett hunted extensively as a youth and was recognized for his skills as a shotgunner. Using a single-shot, 16 gauge and an Ithaca .410 side-by-side, Fawcett earned several awards for trap shooting before the age of 14. When he was ready to move on from trap, Buz’s father handed down his grandfather’s Winchester Model 12. Grandfather “Billy” had used it as a member of the 1924 U.S. Olympic trap team before creating Whiz Bang magazine and Fawcett Publications. Growing up in a publishing family, Fawcett was hired as an associate editor for Sports Afield magazine.
