As a green 18-year-old traveller standing in front of the Great Sphinx of Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, I had the uncanny feeling I’d just stepped into a photo from one of the National Geographic magazines lying around at home. Polished wooden floorboards are practical and fantastic looking, but sometimes a room needs a lighter effect than the typical deep orange or brown of polyurethaned wood. The whitewash paint effect used here adds lightness and a touch of colour without giving your floors a flat, white, overly sterile look of a solid colour. Whitewash is also a great way to add a touch of sophisticated Scandinavian style. Resene Colorwood Whitewash is easy to apply – it’s somewhere between paint and polyurethane to use. When people talk about ‘gut health,’ they are really talking about having a healthy digestive system. Eco warriors don’t come much more hands-on than expat New Zealander Bryan Fitzgerald and his friend and co-warrior Suzy Evans. Green smoothies are a great way to start the day and you can use whatever is growing in your garden. Spinach is one of my favourite leafy green vegetables to use in smoothies because it thrives in the garden all year round and is easy to grow. I love that it boasts lots of nutrients, antioxidants and also contains lutein (which is good for sparkling eyes). But you can use kale or silverbeet instead if you wish. Any option will fuel your body beautifully. The parsley in here may look like a token gesture, but don’t underestimate its “super powers”. As we age, our skin’s automatic process of cell renewal slows down. Sprightly twentysomethings are in good stead, with cells replenished, on average, once every 20 days. Fast forward a decade and you’re looking at a turnover rate of once a month. Across the Heretaunga Plains is a network of off-road, mostly flat cycling trails that form a ‘great ride’ of more than 200km. The word kimono means “thing worn” and can refer to a manylayered silk garment worn for formal occasions or as a looseflowing robe to step into after bathing. The basic kimono design is a T-shaped, full-length robe with a stiff collar and long, wide sleeves. The robe is wrapped around the body (left side over the right) and held in place with a stiff sash (or obi), tied at the back. A formal kimono can cost more than a million yen and take considerable time and expertise to put on.
