The wanderer

In every issue of this magazine, there are stories and photographs that echo each other or intersect briefly – usually by chance. Most of the time, these moments go unnoticed. Here’s an example: A photograph of a little bee-eater appears near the front of go! #132. Fifty pages later, there are full-page pictures of two more little bee-eaters flapping their wings. Something as innocuous as this barely raises an eyebrow. There are times, though, where a coincidence makes you ponder; where two stories intersect and strike a nerve. It happened to me when I read Toast Coetzer’s story about Namibia (p 32). WINNIN LETTER

Giant’s Castle is truly special My friend Hennie Storm and I are keen birdwatchers and amateur photographers. Recently, we spent time in the vulture hide at Giant’s Castle in the Drakensberg (inset). We had to book six months in advance! Giant’s Castle is home to a population of the rare and endangered bearded vulture, which is one of the main reasons the hide is so booked up. We also saw jackal buzzards, Cape vultures and a couple of opportunistic black-backed jackals. The highlight for me was managing to photograph these two bearded vultures in flight. Pot ’n Plow, Magoebaskloof

If you drive past Pot ’n Plow late on a winter’s day and the door is closed, pull over anyway. The fireplace is probably burning inside and the doors are closed to keep the heat in. Choose a table close to the fire and watch as local residents and tourists arrive – before long it will look like a scene from Cheers. The Pot ’n Plow is a no-frills restaurant and pub. I visited on a quiet afternoon and the service was fast and friendly, but it looks like the kind of place where you might have to wait for your food on a busy night. Where does your love for the outdoors come from? I grew up in Australia, one of those great sunburnt countries, where most kids grow up playing outside in the fresh air. The land of miracle & wonder

An aurora seems to be swirling in the sky above Noordoewer, even if it’s just the sunrise adding lashings of pink champagne to the low clouds. When a rainbow dances into the scene, phones come out for photos. The show ends as suddenly as it began and we get our passports stamped. I’m at the border with seasoned tour guide Rey Janse van Rensburg. The park on Gauteng’s doorstep

It’s always exciting to explore a place for the first time. The landscape you’ve only ever seen in photos takes shape in front of your eyes. Sometimes it’s better in real life; other times you’d like to sue for false advertising… Pilanesberg is a bit of both. I arrive at Manyane rest camp and it seems like the North West Parks Board has forgotten that their premier game reserve even exists. Namibia’s conservation heroes

If you like the outdoors, you’ve probably watched the popular conservation series Groen on kykNET (channel 144 on DStv). Rain always has the last say in the Kalahari. It’s a bit like cricket: Your chances of seeing the last wicket fall decrease when clouds gather. And there’s not much you can do about it. I compiled a long list of places I wanted to visit, but in the week leading up to my trip, the weather forecast showed that the Kalahari had other plans: rain – lots of it. It’s hard to believe that the Land Rover Discovery has been around for 28 years. In 1989, the year it was introduced, the car was a novelty. Make friends in Fraserburg

In his book Karoo, published in 1955, the author Lawrence Green quotes a resident of Fraserburg: “[The town] was on the road to nowhere, and for that reason it missed – or escaped – various forms of excitement.” More than six decades later, those words still ring true. The Libertas mansion in Stellenbosch, 246 years later

Adam Tas was born in Amsterdam in 1668. At the age of 29 he moved to the Cape as a Free Burgher and became a secretary on his uncle Henning Hüsing’s farm Meerlust, near Stellenbosch. At the time, there were about 100 small farms in the district. One of those was Libertas – 44 morgen in size (37 hectares) at the base of Papegaaiberg. The original owner of the farm was a certain Jan Cornelisz (also known as Jan Bombam), who sold it to Hans Jurgen Grimpe in 1692. AFRICA AT ITS BEST

Here’s that photo that anyone who travels in Africa wants to add to his or her portfolio. Our travel editor Toast Coetzer often visits Botswana and the Caprivi in Namibia – guiding photographic safaris with Mpafa Travel (see p 56) – and this time he found himself on a sunset cruise on the Okavango River near Ngepi Camp. If you’ve ever been on such a cruise on a wild African river, you’ll know how it goes: The sun sinks slowly towards an impossibly distant, flat horizon, wobbling as it goes; morphing from perfectly round to perfectly less round as the dusty atmosphere gobbles it up. I almost got the same shot! I took this photo near the Malelane gate in the Kruger Park. Later, as I paged through your 2017 Kruger guide, I noticed that it was very similar to the “Kruger at its Best” shot. I bought another copy and covered the page in adhesive plastic for posterity! I’m not a professional photographer and took my photo using a cellphone – there wasn’t time to grab my proper camera. We couldn’t get accommodation inside the park, so we booked at a place outside. Rabbits and hares – what’s the difference?

“Rabbit”is just another name for a hare, right? Not actually. There are very clear differences between rabbits and hares, the most crucial being that hares live exclusively above ground while rabbits take shelter in crevices and burrows beneath the ground. Because hares live above ground with no place to hide, they have to rely on speed to get away from predators. As a result, they have long, powerful hind legs whereas rabbits have shorter legs to help them quickly get into a burrow. Hares – like the scrub hare pictured – also have longer ears than rabbits and are much less social. Hey Ma, I’m in the Congo!

It’s early on a Friday morning in November 2016. A taxi picks me up outside my guesthouse in Gisenyi, Rwanda. Gisenyi is a border town – just on the other side is Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It takes minutes to get to the little border post and I join the queue.
