Leisureland Caravans in Bellville, one of the oldest caravan dealerships in the Western Cape, celebrates a double anniversary this month. First, Kerneels Nortjé established Leisureland as a caravan dealership 35 years ago, and five years later his son Johan bought the business. So Johan has been in charge for the past 30 years. According to Johan, the caravanning in South Africa has changed significantly through the years. They used to have 60-70 caravans in stock and the caravans usually cost around R12 000. A trailer was  only R450. (A Sprite Scout cost R10 995 in 1990, and two years later it jumped to R25 000.) Leisureland started out as a Wilk agency, with Sprite added later. Born-frees will probably be a bit too young to remember the very first RAV4, which was a teeny tiny little SUV. Picture a Suzuki Jimny with curves and a not-so-serious off-road reputation. South Africa’s longest river has many names because it winds its way through many regions and visits many cultures. At its source in Lesotho, its name is the Senqu, it then becomes the IGqili in the Eastern Cape, after which it is commonly called the Orange. And here in the Richtersveld where its great waters flow into the Atlantic Ocean, the Nama people call it the Gariep. Suzuki South Africa loaned us a new Jimny with standard tyres and suspension. Because there were three of us and we had to be self-sufficient for a week, Front Runner fitted the Jimny with aroof rack and awning, four ammo crates, stratchets, a table with chairs, a 20 ℓ water can, and fuel-, spade- and spare-wheel mounting brackets. At the 11th hour we decided to take along sand boards, and although Front Runner also has a mount for these, we secured them to the spare wheel. The Houwhoek and Mount Hebron nature reserves are situated on the southwestern tip of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and at the top end of the Botriver Lagoon near Hermanus. “ You wouldn’t easily find a sturdier tow bar than the one that’s part of the Desert Armour bumper.” According to Japanese automaker Isuzu, it has built around 25 million engines since its inception in 1916 – this amounts to an astonishing 650+ a day, every day for the past 103 years. Two of these engines today operate in the D-Max double cab 4x4: the 2,5 ℓ and a 3 ℓ. The 2,5 ℓ engine delivers 15% less torque than its big brother (320 Nm versus 380 Nm) and the 2,5 can tow a weight of just 2 t compared to the larger engine’s 2,9 t. Summit’s caravans are not an uncommon sight in South African campsites. This series has been built for the past 10 years by Frantel Distribution, a manufacturer that often comes up with new and unconventional ideas. Three years ago, I started playing bowls, and it wasn’t long before a friend at the bowling club invited me to a camping weekend at the Lekkerbreek resort near Mookgophong. The dust of the recent Caravan, Camping and Destination Show, where the prototypes of Conqueror’s new range of UEV off-road caravans was launched, had hardly settled before these caravans were sent on a tough test run. According to Philip de Vries, the four caravans were towed for six days, covering 3 500 km along the Molopo River, including some rough dirt roads north of Vryburg in the Northern Cape. The sole purpose of the trip was a shake-down cruise to reveal potential problems. Hoefer is the only caravan manufacturer to export caravans from another African country to South Africa, and according to Charles Hoefer, they were well received at the recent Caravan, Camping and Destination Show. Suzuki South Africa’s marketing team came up with the tagline “Giant killer”. This slogan stems from Jimny owners’ claims that the diminutive 4x4 can take on any big off-road vehicle. If you own a big off-road rig, you’re sure to scoff. How dare they make such statements? However, it is true that the Jimny has merits over large and expensive 4x4 vehicles. How does it compare? The Jimny’s turn radius is 4,9 m compared to a Nissan Patrol’s 12,6 m, and the Jimny is 3,48 m long and 1,645 m wide compared to a Toyota Land Cruiser 200’s 4,99 m and 1,98 m respectively. In the late 1950s, I experienced an incident with my school friend Jannie Barnard that I remember to this day. It was a Saturday and Jannie’s father, Uncle Jan, went to trade in his car for another. South African canopy manufacturer RSI adopted a popular concept from Australia. Its Smart Tray Canopy Combo consists of a flatbed that replaces your bakkie’s standard load bed. With this flatbed, you can load commercial ISO pallets with a forklift onto the back (not possible to do with most normal bakkies) and you can also fit dropsides if you want to transport building materials in bulk. At this year’s f.r.e.e trade show in Munich, Germany (one of the world’s largest leisure and travel fairs), Danish toy giant Lego had a display that featured a life-sized replica of Volkswagen’s Type 2 Camper Van and go! Drive & Camp caught up with the man responsible for the remarkable lookalike, Berlin-based René Hoffmeister. He is one of only 12 Lego-certified modellers in the world and has been building them since 1999. René and his colleague Pascal Lenhard used computer programs to create a digital model of the vehicle using pictures and info from Volkswagen – which told them exactly how many bricks and assorted pieces they would need to complete the project in time for the show.
