More than a century after Harriet James’ ethereal Blue Garden on Newport, Rhode Island’s craggy, boulder-strewn coast was lauded as a pinnacle of the Gilded Age, its tender rescue by noted philanthropist and horticulturist Dorrance “Dodo” Hamilton is being heralded as a noble preservation feat. “Once we became aware of its rich history, we were compelled to get involved,” says Hamilton. The rich history Hamilton refers to dates to the early 1900s, when copper and railroad magnate Arthur Curtiss James and his wife, Harriet, added glamorous Newport to their string of properties. They segued away from storied Bellevue Avenue, favored by the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Dukes, to settle on the moors atop the tallest hill on Aquidneck Island. Camilla and Luke selected Atlanta’s iconic Piedmont Driving Club, a place they frequented on date nights before becoming engaged, for their wedding and reception. Floral designer Amy Osaba (who also happens to be the bride’s former ballet instructor) was enlisted to flower the affair, resulting in an elegant abundance of greenery and a neutral palette punctuated with pops of pinks, reds, and golds. “I BELIEVE THAT THOMAS WOLFE didn’t get it all quite right. You can go home again, and do it in style,” says Elaine Griffin, as she fans out a tablecloth over a weathered table and begins to smooth out the wrinkles. Never one to do things strictly by the book, the designer—who spent a number of years living in Paris and New York building a successful career creating sophisticated rooms and sharing decorating ideas in magazines and on television—has recently moved back to Brunswick, Georgia, the town where she was born and bred. WHEN ANNE TEN DONKELAAR TAKES an increasingly rare moment to sit down and talk about her art—the complex, beautiful constructions she creates from real flowers as well as two-dimensional representations she finds in books—she practically radiates. Pretty and energetic, bright and open, the 36-year-old Dutch artist inspires and motivates because she so obviously finds contentment in what she sees and does. And what Anne does has resulted in a robust body of work that has captivated flower lovers around the world. “I don’t start with an idea in my head or a sketch on paper,” she says. “I follow the flowers and the colors I’m working with.” Anne says she has always loved making pictures, playing with color, and concocting floral soups and art out of the things she finds…

flower: Tell us a little bit about your background. Were you the child who was always rearranging your room? YOUNG HUH: Well, I was the kid who would make dioramas and little houses out of shoeboxes and scraps of fabric, but that wasn’t really encouraged by my parents at the time—I remember being very frustrated that they wouldn’t let me choose the color of my bedroom! We lived in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, but both my wonderful parents immigrated from Seoul, Korea. My mother was valedictorian of her class and a biology major; my father is a doctor, and they always told us that basically we had two choices in life: We could be doctors or lawyers.
