STEPPING INTO THE EYE-CATCHING Designers Guild shop on London’s King’s Road, flipping through fabric samples in one of their design center showrooms, or browsing their website, for that matter, is an experience of vivid color, cheerful contrasts, and a bounty of floral motifs. Fern fronds, roses, lilies, gardenias, and hydrangeas bloom on products as wide-ranging as fabrics and wallpapers to bath mats and tableware. Founded in 1970 by British designer Tricia Guild, the company never strays far from its focus on effusive, boldly colored designs. Floral prints are a staple in her 2014 collection, just as they were when Guild started designing several decades ago. “I use flowers and botanical themes in a huge variety of ways in my work,” says Guild. “I love to change the scale or set…

STEP THROUGH THE DOORS of Avant Garden—nestled in Dallas’ Mediterranean-style shopping center Highland Park Village—and into a quaint French biblio-thèque–inspired floral boutique, where glass vases of freshly cut seasonal blooms sold by the stem are always just inside the door, and potted succulents and hydrangeas, ethereal arrangements, and unusual containers are tucked into every shelf and corner. This sort of in-town Eden is what one would expect from Todd Fiscus, the owner of the shop and the Dallas party-planner extraordinaire behind his separate company, Todd Events. Fiscus acquired Avant Garden six years ago, and a year later closed the shop for a few months to create “a belle époque, Parisian library–look,” he says. AS A YOUNG BOY, Tommy Mitchell helped out in the family garden. It wasn’t altruism, he quickly acknowledges; it was a requirement. Dad grew vegetables while Mom focused on flowers, and although Mitchell recalls being fascinated by all of the natural forms sprouting up from the North Carolina dirt, he never imagined that familiarity with the curve of a watermelon vine would one day lead him to shape botanical objects that sprung from his own hands rather than the soil. In the four months leading up to her wedding, Caroline Reehl spent as much time at her pottery wheel as she did planning the other details of her Highlands, North Carolina, nuptials. Working from her Raleigh home studio, the bride-to-be pursued a secret project: fashioning 207 ceramic pears by hand. “I will never forget that number,” Caroline says of the gifts she bestowed upon wedding guests. “I hand-threw them all on my wheel, then hand-sculpted the tops and gave them a gold luster glaze. It was truly a labor of love.” The pears have since become a staple for the bride’s business, Caroline Ceramics, launched in 2010 on the heels of her Ole Miss degree, and are now sold through her website as well as in boutiques. My inspiration for this design was the desert landscape in Tucson. Here we have an extended period of warm weather to enjoy outdoor entertaining, so I created an eco-friendly table runner for my patio that I could enjoy all summer long. Using shadow boxes as containers, I planted four living squares and arranged one cut-flower square that will dry beautifully. They were carefully designed using color and texture to create a curvilinear line that is picked up by the next square when placed in row. This five-piece table runner will last several months—maybe even years—with very little upkeep. Each living square has six or seven varieties of succulents, aloe, or cacti planted with soil, but here I’m demonstrating how to create the cut-flower square using floral foam, which keeps the…
